Anyone Toured in Hawaii
 

Has anyone done any touring in Hawaii? If so where did you tour and for how many days? i was looking at maybe trying to do a tour in Maui and was thinking 2 weeks would be plenty of time to see the island. I would think you could even do the Big Island in that time. Looking for everyones feedback.

I haven't toured there, but I went to the Big Island last January. It was awesome! Don't forget to leave yourself time for snorkeling, kayaking, hiking around on lava, and just lying around on the beach!

We stayed on the Kona side, but drove to Volcanoes NP and around on the Hilo side as well. The roads were pretty narrow. If I had had a bike, I would have wanted to ride part way up Moana Kea (until the end of the pavement) or possibly in Volcanoes, though when I was there the air quality was terrible (volcanic fumes), so that's something to be aware of. The Kona side is hot and windy, the Hilo side is humid and rainy.

To add to what I wrote in the thread raybo linked to above, I also biked on the Big Island beginning from Hilo. It's a surprisingly gentle 4,000 ft climb from Hilo up to Hawaii Volcanoes NP. I had no problems at all with fumes when I was there (twice). The ride along the east coast is pretty nice, but there is some traffic. We crossed over to the west coast on an old road which was pleasant. My friends and I did not like the dry Kona coast nearly as much as the east coast, but we did not ride south of the Kona airport.

Kauai has a great climb up Waimea Canyon. It's much harder than the climb up to the national park from Hilo on the Big Island. The north coast of Kauai is gorgeous.

I courted my wife to be riding bicycles on Maui. Riding the Hana Road and camping at the Seven Sacred Pools is a lifetime must. I lived on Oahu for fifteen years and have ridden most everywhere on the island. If you want to camp on Oahu I would avoid the summer months. It will be pretty crowded. It is really pretty crowded year round.

My wife's family lives on the Big Island and we have done quite a bit of riding there. There is a lot of the Volcano NP accessible to bikes and because you can stop many places where cars can't it can be quite a unique experience crossing the still warm and steaming, youngest earth on Earth. I am writing an article in Bicycle Life about the Waimea District of the Big Island and hope to finish it when I am there this Christmas. Riding High on Hawai'i
