I wear those now when I ride when it gets down to just above 0c or below.....cant imagine wearing one at anything above 5c.

Enquiring Minds want to know.

It's the Asian way. Whiter skin is revered. But there must also be something about the cooling effect of what we regard so much clothing. The Asians I worked with when orcharding all would wear full cover clothing, including gumboots, on the hottest days.

As to stevage, maybe look at the "sunscreen" arm protectors; they are similar to arm warmers but made of a lighter material and usually in a light colour. It means you can still use your short-sleeve jerseys, use the arm covers as needed, and save weight overall.

loose garments to block the sun I can understand (think of Arab countries) but a tight face and neck thingee, that I dont fathom.
but hey, I guess it works for them.

I have a whole set of those arm coolers in different colours, and they are good. However, in temps over 30C, I find them a bit too hot for my liking. So on hot rides in Australia, I'd wear them until about noon or 1pm, then take them off and apply sunscreen.

it's traditional to cover up, the idea is white is beautiful.
getting a tan makes one look like a peasant....think 12 hours a day in the rice paddies.
they're amazed to hear about the office ladies in new york PAYING to sit in little
cubicles to turn brown.

When I was a bike courier there were a few African-American guys that wore tights even in hot temps. Unlike the Chinese women, I don't think they were using them to prevent getting darker (though black folks do get darker from the sun)...I think they just liked the sleek look. There's a pro cyclist who always wears long-sleeve jerseys due to a skin condition.

You can order similar from Torpedo 7.

Have a look ... http://www.torpedo7.co.nz/shop/bike/jerseys

Ha. Half the gear I own is from Torpedo 7 (Including the "hi vis windbreaker jersey" shown there). Definitely too hot for me though. I've flirted with the idea of one of the downhill jerseys, but they're made for a completely different purpose, and I'm skeptical.

The hi vis windbreaker jersey would be too hot (I've got a couple of those too) but there are non-windbreaker jerseys there which I've worn up to the high 20s, and even into 30-ish. You probably wouldn't want to wear them in temps much hotter than that, but for hotter days I either do the arm-cooler thing mentioned above, or I wear the long-sleeved jersey and bring a sleeveless. Then when it get really hot, I switch to the sleeveless and sunscreen.

I hadn't realized that much clothing lets significant amount of UV through: http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advi...rotection.html for instance a cotton t-shirt might let 20% through which isn't huge but probably adds up in super-sunny conditions. Also I learn that Australia has pioneered UBF clothing ratings. My area is not on avg super-sunny but in spring we can get some very clear sunny days where everyone wants to go out & enjoy wearing light clothing but the strong sun combined w/little base tan can easily lead to burning after a day outside.

I use Pearl Izumi sun sleeves and any old jersey I want to wear. The new model is called inercooler or something like that. Living in Florida I have found them to actually be cooler than just a jersey even in the peak of summer heat and humidity.

I have an older version of this jersey. I find it very comfortable of a 90F sunny day. It only has back pockets. The reflective white color makes a lot of difference, but it also gets noticeably dirt real easy. I just decided not to care about the grease stains.
