Giant OCR for tours / commutes. Is $575 good price?
 

I am looking at getting a bike to commute about 8 miles and a touring style bike seems like an interesting option. I currently only have a mountain bike so I wanted something a tad more comfortable on roads, but also will be a bit more durable than a pure road bike.

I saw a Giant OCR Touring Bike for sale at a local shop for $575, and am wondering if what they are asking for is a good deal. It’s MSRP was $1200 in 2004 ($1300 in 2003).

It looked to be in almost mint condition, maybe a couple tiny blemishes on the frame when you look close at it.

They didn’t have a tag on it or any documentation and were speculating it was a 2006 model, However it is actually a 2004 when I looked it up. It seemed like they were generally unsure and not BSing me as it was untagged, but who knows.

However they did give me the $575 price quote assuming it was 2 or 3 years newer than it actually was. I could maybe make them an offer. I think they have had the bike in stock for a while and now that its winter I imagine business has slowed. Any thoughts on this price and if it would be a good fit?

Assuming it fits you well that would make a nice bike for commuting and road touring. The price seems fair, not a killer deal but certainly fair. Generally used stuff goes for roughly half of what it did new.

jptkts, Welcome to the forum.

Should be an excellent commuter and will require a clamp-on front carrier for touring (not a problem). Gearing, while fine for most usage could be criticized for expedition level touring. If in good condition it seems a fair price from a bike shop.

Thanks for the quick replys, and thanks for the welcome. Yea its a fair deal. Nice thing about getting it from shop is that it's been tuned up and cleaned very well. Only downsides are that it doesn't come with any sort of bags (which may help for commuting) so some extra investment may be needed.i could try to offer $530 so basically with tax it would come to the 575 they had it priced at. Guess it cant hurt.The other bike i was looking at was a 2012 Raleigh Cadent ft-1 LG large for $499. It was pretty new but in my opinion had less features and didn't look quite as cool, tho it was newer and lighter I believe

Yes, do make sure with the LBS to make sure it's a good fit. Then offer $500 cash... you never know! For commuting and light touring, it looks like a nice bike. If you end up using it a lot for your intended purposes, you could sell this later and invest in a different one say a year or two from now.

Fair price for a decent bike if it fits. I would buy that used Giant over that new Raleigh any day. Bags don't normally come with bikes so you have that added expense no matter what you buy, FWIW very few bikes come with any accessories, like racks, fenders, lights or bags. Some don't even come with pedals :eek:
