Good info ccycommute. I know what you're saying. A racer kid at the Trek shop in Tucson told us he rode the Valencia cross country and preferred it to the 520 because it was lighter. It took a while for the truth to come out, HE had to stand some hills on it. Well if he's standing hills, what will I be doing?? Thanks Pat. I'll do the tooth count this weekend. Last thing I wanna do is pay good money for a bike that's worse than what I already have!!

Below are the specs on the trek 520 and I have a link showing gear range and speeds etc. After you count your teeth open a second calculator and put in the numbers for your mountain bike and you can compare gear inches and speeds between the two. Remember to change for the tire size as well.

48/36/26
Shimano HG50 11-32, 9 speed
11,12,14,16,18,21,24,28,32
