Thanks for your feedback! I am late getting back to this but my big ride is coming up next week. If you happen to be in Montery on the 21st, it would be nice to join a group for the support. I will leave that morning for San Simeon. I plan to spend both Tuesday and Wednesday meandering south. I am a newbie to this route (although I have driven highway 1 many times) and just started touring last year. You guys are vets! I have confidence I will find camping along the route. If I don't see you along the way, then have a great trip and we can meet up at GWBR.

PS
Talked to my friends yesterday about their trip and they didn't have any real problems with the road north of Cambria last week. Said it was a little rougher than other sections, but didn't slow them down or significantly affect their ride.

I'll miss you by a day. I'm leaving SF on Monday (20th) to ride down to Santa Cruz/Capitola and will get to Monterey on the 21st. Then I plan to stop in Big Sur and San Simeon. As mentioned, there should be no problem with hike&bike camping spots with available places in Big Sur, Kirk Creek (bring water), Plaskett Creek, and San Simeon Beach. Some friends of mine are currently riding down to SLO so I should be getting an update on the road condition north of Cambria very soon.

One more question if you don't mind. Do you lock your bike to something every night you camp in that area. What kind of lock? Thanks!

Hmmm--the HB sites at San Clemente and San Onofre have been closed for years, and at least for five years at San Onofre, so don't take that sign as gospel.
And in Southern California, the rangers don't seem to have any sympathy for tourists when the sites are full, as they can often be. I talked to a fellow who had ridden 98 miles in 105 F heat, planned to stay at South Carlsbad SB per the "bible", and had to move on south another seven miles to San Elijo when the ranger let him know the HB site there was gone. When he arrived, he was by no means a "happy camper".

I carry a light cable lock and do lock my bike up at night - usually lock it to a picnic table or tree at the campsite. It's also handy to have the lock along during the day when stopping at a convenience store, restaurant, or restroom break. I don't think the risk of theft in the area of this ride is very high, but I don't want to tempt someone who might be inclined to take a bike they see without any lock at all.
