Handlebar bag on a trekking/butterfly setup?
 

Hello everyone,

I'm just starting out on touring and would like to ask on a solution to place a handlebar bag on a trekking/butterfly setup.

Below is a pic on how everything's setup on the bike. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of space to fit a bag at the stem mount and also since the bike has suspension and a dyno powered light, I can't mount something too low or it will either hit the light or even worse rest on it's heat-sync (the visor-like extension on top).

Any and all help will be greatly appricated!

What I did was mount a second stem below the handlebar stem since I had room. Then in the lower stem I mounted a short piece of handlebar about 5 inches long. This then served as the mounting spot for the handlarbag's mounts. This placed the bag (Arkel) level with the handlebar, but did not interfere with the cables.

The pix below shows the second stem before I mounted the stub handlebar into it.

That's a very smart idea, but I'm afraid that the suspension and front light won't leave enough clearance for the bag.

How big is your bag? My Arkel handlebar bag doesn't go much below where the lower stem is located/about even with the top tube. That's far above the wheel or your light. I have an above wheel rack that I mount sometimes for touring and I can fit a small drybag on the rack below the handlebar bag.

I don't have a bag yet :) I'm looking for a solution so I can order it online.

Klick Fix and Ortlieb both offer an extension piece to add to their handlebar bag mount,
for trekking bar bikes, or other purposes..

SJS, in UK has a 1pc T and 1 bolt, like clamp, that is thinner stack than using an actual stem.

( i used a 2nd stem and 1" Tube to mount a KF bar bag mount, NB,
KF mount takes Ortlieb bags on them,
(the reverse Combo, DNF)

the bike has a suspension fork, but a rather short travel.. I have a Fork crown mount light
same position as yours, it's OK under the HB Bag,

Add a second stem,you can hang whatever you want from that.

I found the following on SJS, just not sure if the attachment point fits my stem... will have to look into it, although to be honest, I would have preferred a better solution made specifically for trekking bars.

it does not fit your stem , it replaces a few spacers on the fork steerer,
under your stem , = to it's thickness..
then you replace your stem, back on top of it.

Otlieb has their own..* But you could add the above to a Carradice Super C bar Bag

they come with a KF Bar mount hardware kit.

Wrong kind of stem on the bike... damn, it looks like a nice solution.

43mm + whatever the original base offers just might work.

I have that type stem on my old touring bike with a second stem,it works fine.

Shims and spacers over the Quill stem would work, But the Direct mount is straightforward.
It moves the bag further away, to get Knuckle clearance to grab that part of the bar near to the Bag sides.

I was just Googling this subject and found the following post right here on B/F (tried searching for it through the forums search engine...). Does anyone know what kind of bag this is? It's not big, but I can live with a smaller handlebar bag compared to adding more hardware to an already overweight situation (I'm talking about the rider, not just the bike! :) ).

They don't seem to have this specific model... I'll look around locally for anything that can take a direct mount and spacer, but touring hasn't caught up here in Athens, and everything that can be found is either really low quality or twice the price of what's found online.

I use the Topeak Tourguide bag.

That's exactly the clean setup that I would prefer to have; just one question concerning the height between the bottom of the bag and the wheel itself. If you take a look at my first post, do you believe that there's enough space there for this particular bag?

Here's an image with bag from side. Note that my fork has an uncut steering tube so it is higher than would be most bikes. My frame is size 52cm, so it is on the short side. Overall you should have plenty of room. I estimate your light top would be about where my front rack is located. They are ok, but I am switching to off-road drop bars soon.

Its what I use on my daily commuter, year around, and on my Trekking bike..

often my 'hand grip' is open palm .. a comfortable relaxed set-up..
