cross country tour routes heeeelp!?

05-12-02

Hi,

Am planning a transcontinental fully loaded solo tour for mid aug or 1st of sept. start with end of sept or mid oct. finish. am going west to east with either San Diego start or further north (if routes are more viable) ending in Savannah, GA. Any info on good bike routes across CA, AZ, NM, TX or alt. routes across Mid CA, NEV, UT, maybe down to AZ,across to upper NM appreciated!
I had thought of southern US border hugging route, (via Interstate 8) but had concerns about summer temps, water supplies and camping situation so close to Mexico with all the border activity. I also heard New Mexico requires a permit for bikes on the Interstate, reply when convenient, I won,t be finalizing plans untill late June....Thanks for any help! I can reciprocate about SC biking and some of the mountain terrain in NC and some beach info, particularly Myrtle Beach SC and Charleston SC. I know about Adventure Cycling and will possibly use some of their info but I won,t have but a six week window to do this so I am looking for more straight through routes....ANY info is appreciated though! Also, Most importantly! any info on nationally recognized charities that sponsor or have bike affiliated events will be a great help as I want to do this partly as a charity bike ride...I already know about MDA sponsored rides in my area so they would be a good match but any others you may have heard of will be a big help. Just make sure they know that I am not a RAMM racer though!! Thanks,

J. Michael
