collapsible fire pit for touring?
Hi everyone,
I do a couple overnight bike rides in summer to the beach with friends. We like to have a fire, but the park demands the fire be in a metal container.
I found this in my search:

I think I could make it work by leaving the grills at home (we don't cook out, we eat at a local seafood place), and perhaps drilling the legs out to save more weight. It's listed as being 8lbs. I could probably get it down to 5 lbs. I think it could be strapped to the top of my bag and tents, or bungied to the side of my panniers. Still though, it's a tad large. If I could find one just a little bit smaller, I'd buy it.
Anyone know of one more suited to packing on a bicycle?

I think it depends on what their definition of "metal container" is. If you are camping on the sand you could perhaps get buy with something like this:

Just a metal disk to sit on the sand and a metal wind brake to surround the fire.
If it were me, what I would do is just go to Home Depot and poke around in the sheet metal heating duct section. They have all sorts of shapes of sheet metal. I would probably just get a 6" wide strip of lightweight sheet metal that is long enough to make a fire ring the size that I want and then cut another circle as a bottom if you think that is necessary. Fold the two pieces of sheet metal up and put them on your rack someplace. If I remember correctly, they sell both steel and aluminum sheet metal so you can probably buy a sheet of lightweight aluminum and cut it to whatever shape you wanted.
i suppose it comes down to how fussy the rangers are. If they walk up and your fire is enclosed in a metal fire ring is that good enough? Or do they want to see it up off the sand in a proper fire pit?

Good questions all of them... and I'm not sure if it needs to be elevated. I don't think it does. But I do think it needs to have a bottom. I'm basing this on what I've seen others using.

By the time it dries out enough for summer touring there is a Fire risk, making open fires a No-No.

Kmart thingy...oh my gosh. that would work. not as sexy, but probably good enough. and way cheap. if I hate it, I could just leave it there for the next person to use.

I can easily carry another 5-8lbs on my bike. It's only an over-nighter, and I'm not new to touring. Just looking for the most ideal setup for a reasonable cost.

So if you're looking for something cheap, light and fireproof, why not see if you can dig up one of those metal cookie tins they sell biscuits and cakes in? They come round or square and most are light guage steel.
If you insist on a HUGE fire - guess you could stack two end-to-end. I expect the regulations regarding fire pits are an effort to keep the beach clean, so you should dump the cans in a garbage bin before leaving.

You might also pick up the phone and call the park and discuss with them their expectations in terms of metal containers and tell them you'll be coming by bike. Then if you happen to encounter an overly diligent ranger type who doesn't like what he sees you can say...."But sir, I called and talked to Joe Smith at your HQ office and he agreed that this met your requirements and would be OK."
