Off bike shoes

This question was inspired by the Flip flop thread but not fully answered.

What would you recommend as an off bike shoe when touring and wanting to keep weight low? Flip flops is one answer but I hate them (the thong-between-the-toes kind anyway).

I have worn fake Crocs knock offs and been pretty happy with them. They are typically lighter than the real ones. That said when someone lifted mine on a fairly recent tour I found I didn't miss them all that much and didn't replace them for the remainder of the tour. Lately if I plan to be hiking a lot I have taken light trail runners (16 ounces for the pair), otherwise I often just wear my SPD Sidis for everything.

Tour very bike centered? , ride-eat- sleep- ride, or someplace you want to get off the bike,
go look at the town, castle, museum , hike into the woods, and all those things..

I bring walking friendly shoes.. because, I stay in an interesting place for a week, sometimes.

& stow flip-flops for dodgy shower floors..

I've been playing with the idea of picking up a pair of the new ultra light running shoes that are compressible and weigh in at about 7 ounces. Seems like it would make a nice camp shoe but the soles are thin.

Didn't this come up a good long time ago? Was it staehp1 who bought a pair?? Sorry, could be totally wrong...
Oops see now he already replied in thread... ignore.

For ultra-light touring, I'd toss in some jazz dance shoes. They're about as light and as small as shoes can get, they sort of look like street shoes, and they're cheap.

+1. No extra shoes for me either. Keen sandals are all I've worn on my last four tours. Generally with short wool socks.

I'd recommend Nike Rift. Very light, very plyable (for packing), and very comfortable. Looks are subjective, but I like them.

I like Sidi bike racing shoes to ride; lately MTB shoes. I can walk some on them when I have to but I prefer a second pair of shoes. I formerly used Nike Aqua shoes; lately I have a pair of Keen Clearwater sandals.

I could tolerate flip-flops for this purpose.

Yeah, I don't know about these. If it weren't for the split front (reminds me of an expression I won't use here), they wouldn't be so bad.

Teva sandals. No socks in the shower, sit down and let them dry, then add socks and go for a walk.

I'm told they've been china-ized (cheap, lousy), but I just cracked my last box last summer, so I'm good to go for a few yearst yet.

The best shoe for off the bike are Chacos. www.chacos.com. You can wear them all day long and they will never hurt your feet. I've had mine for ten years now, and I have replaced the sole once. The straps are still fine. I love CHACOS.

Nike Aqua socks. Wasn't aware these were still being produced. They are light and packable, and inexpensive at less than $10 plus shipping.

MTB Sidis for riding, Goretex trail runners for off the bike. Nice to be able to walk around in wet conditions (grass, puddles, etc.) with dry feet. Plus I like to hike and explore on foot.

I love my chacos, but the vibram soles weigh a ton (more than any running shoe) - I actually have them on now - I just don't like lugging them around when they are not on my feet. I think this year I am going to get a pair of Sanuk shoes to keep on the bike. They are light and pack down to nothing - pretty much lightweight sandal soles with a canvas upper.

My words of truth. I wear the sandals on and off the bike, and most of the time in 'real life' if I could. I love Keen stuff... but becoming frustrated how ever model of sandal I've own of them have broke in the same spot. The smell is awful however after wearing them non stop for days/weeks/months on end.

Currently wearing a pair of some sort of extremely breathable Merrell shoe that also stinks, but have held up well so far after 3 months wearing them non stop 16 hours a day in Central America.

Proves that everyone has different experiences. I like my Chacos a lot, but after three years there is an area on the straps that is frayed about halfway through. The soles are fine, which for me is astonishing.
I like to tour with them as my only footwear, winter or summer. Need to get them restrapped before my next big tour. For fine dining and museums I suck up the dork factor and wear socks.(every woman I know shudders when they see me with wool socks under my chacos in the winter, but thats what I like to wear riding in the rain)

I loath anything Keen, as they tend to last me about two months before falling apart.

I love my Merrells... I have three pairs for different purposes and cannot abide non barefoot shoes for anything but cycling.

They are also rather nice to ride on on flat or half step pedals... despite being really light that Vibram sole is very tough and of course, flexible.
