Front light with front bag

Hi I mostly lurk here but now have a question. I am going on a tour soon, and I have an Ortleib handel bar bag.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a light that would fit around the headtube as the bag sits above the handelbar bags.
I am riding a Garneaux touring bike.
Thanks for your help.
Paul

I use a light on my helmet, but I must say that while on tour, I rarely ride at night.

problem solvers light mount

if your front wheel is quick release, this mount replaces the nut on the non-drive side. You've got the added benefit of bringing the light a little lower as well.

I had the same problem and adapted a Minoura handle bar spacegrip on the fork below my bag. Like Northwest rider, I seldom ride after night anymore, but there are places in the world where having a headlight is required whether you use them or not. Besides, I've been unintentionally caught arriving at my destination after dark.

There are some fork crown mounts here: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/b&m.asp

I don't know why fork crown mounts are so rare. Do bike light makers ride bikes at all?

If you have a threaded mid fork rack mount but do not use a low rider rack with panniers, you can make a light mount that threads into that braze on fitting. I used a short section of a wooden broom handle, drilled a hole through it and used a long M5 bolt with some lock washers. The broom handle was the right diameter to accept a handlebar mounted light.

If you do not have the mid fork fittings, you can use the fender mount but that puts your light pretty low.

Or if you do not want a chunk of wood sticking out of the side of your bike, you can buy a Paul Gino light mount. Do a internet search to find it.

You can also use a length of handlebar that some fixie rider has cut short, or the plastic tube in the middle of a roll of receipt paper.

Dyno lights are usually the fork crown mounts. Battery powered lights are typically handlebar mount for quick removal. I have actually mounted a couple of lights to the stem clamp bolt.

Here is a Carradice SuperC handlebar bag with a light mounted at the fork crown.

I removed the clamp portion from a Minoura Spacegrip and bolted it directly to my JandD front rack.

Thanks for all the ideas, you have given me lots to think about.

I run a second stem so my ortlieb bag sits below the bars, this also frees up some room for the hands.

Got any pictures?

I have a similar setup to Jim's except my front light is a Busch & Muller Lumotec IQ Cyo Sensor and the my handlebar bag is a Ortlieb Ultimate 5 medium but the same concept. My set-up has worked well including on a 3,000 km tour.

Sorry no photo with the light and bag in the shot but this is the light set-up.

I don't why handlebar bag manufactures make their bags so you can't put a head light on the bars, it's just nuts. But you do have two options to get around it. One is to mount two lights, one on each fork blade. The other is to get a Minoura SGL300 quick release accessory holder that can clamp to your handlebar and a light and or computer is clamped to the T bar, then it's rotated upward just enough to clear the bag so the light can project forward..

Never mind someone already mentioned the Minoura, but you could mount a light or lights to the fork blade if the lights bracket will accommodate an odd size shaped surface to attach to.

You can also do something similar with the eyelet at the skewer, Paul makes the "Gino" light mount for this, and someone makes a knock off of it as well. Screws right into the threads at the end of the fork, mid-fork or wherever you have an M5 tap. Depending on how the light is balanced, you might need to run a strip of duct tape around the mount to keep the light from repositioning itself. I set up my girlfriends tourer with a light here and it works well, especially for illuminating pot holes at night. I was curious if it'd be less visible, but it shows up quite brightly in my rearview mirror when we are riding together, but she also has a light on her handlebar, which I think is good for riding in city traffic as the lower one can sometimes be obscured by parked cars to traffic coming from the right, but a helmet light is the best solution for this. If you are trying to travel light, sometimes a helmet light makes an elegant solution as it means you can leave your headlamp you use around camp at home if you don't mind wearing your helmet in camp when you need a light! ;)

I must say that I tried the Gino mount on my commuter, but didn't find it compatible with panniers on my front rack. That said, I was trying to use it in conjunction with the M5 hole on the bottom of the Nitto Big Front Rack.
