Front shifting a MTB crankset
Hi,
I have a Shamano XT FC-M780 crank on a touring bike, the rest of the bike has Ultegra 10 speed with STI shifters. I am looking at a XT FD-M781 front derailleur and hoping I can shift it with my STI shifters but worried that the Cable pull will be too far off. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on this? The M781 uses the new dyna system which I think has different cable pull requirements than the older M761 so if the M781 doesn’t work could the M761 work? If none of this works is my only option bar end shifters? Thanks in advance for any advice. |
STI does not work with mtn FD's.
To run STI with the smaller mtn chainrings, I recommend this: http://store.interlocracing.com/alfrde.html I have it on 2 bikes. There is also a lower-end Shimano road FD I've seen recommended, but I forgot which model. |

consider Retroshift .. the Front Shift lever, then, is not the STI .. ka thunk .. shifting ,
but a continuous friction. You, then, still can shift from the brake lever Hoods.. Friction downtube shifter for FD? [I've just run bar end friction for both sides , my more is better stopped at 7 speeds] [x3 chainrings] R'off is a 7 speed IGH , used twice.. dual range.. |

Derailluers do what the shifters tell them to do as long they are shimano compatible - the dyna system is an exact shift system and will not work, so get the m780 or the m771. Tiagra triple is as good if not better than the XT IMHO. I intermix mtb and road bike parts all the time with no problems - I even have my saga set up with XT rear derailleur low normal and ultegra bar ends and other than shifting in the oposite direction it shifts as good or better than anything I got.
