newbie long distance touring question.
hi,all!
this summer i'm going to biking from NJ (clifton) to niagara,NY then to cleveland,OH from there following rail trail to connect with great allegheny passage and then connect with C&O to maryland then jump to delaware and finnaly philly to X-ing into NJ.total mileage approx 2000mi.about 20days or so..i hope i can pull this of. the longest i did was 400mi in 4days and 3nights. i'm going solo, and would like to camping or stealth camp, certainly no hotel (not enough dough) i don't mind sleeping or living like a bum. my question is: 1.can you bike entire route 30 from hancock,NY to malone,NY (30a is OK for bike) my concern only route 30. 2.bivvy sack or sleeping bag?what brand/type?budget under $200 thanks in advance fell free to give me advice what to do and what not. sincere liong crazyasiancyclist. |
2000 miles in 20 days is doable but maybe it's not the best plan. Personally, I like averaging a little less (maybe 60-80 miles a day) but that is a matter of personal preference. You have nothing built in your schedule though for mechanicals or other things that might slow you down. If you want to go minimalist, how about a small tarp and bag; it's nice having something over your head if it rains. Talk to someone local about roads but I'd stay off a busy road like the plague. You want to enjoy your ride, right?

This is really a question for the Touring forum

Also, hancock,NY to malone,NY is not on the direct route to Niagra, NY from NJ. |
Yeah 100 miles a day sounds like alot to me but you may be a lot stronger than I am. I am doing part of that route in reverse this summer. From the Erie Canal near Seneca Falls to Port Jervis.
You might want to look at taking NYS bike route 17 West to NYS bike route 14 north to Erie Canal/NYS bike route 5 to Niagra. |

Is there a typo? I don't see rte 30/30a for hancock,NY to malone,NY on Google Maps. Rte 17 and Rte 11 seem to be going parallel to Rte 81.
Also, hancock,NY to malone,NY is not on the direct route to Niagra, NY from NJ. from downtown hancock i just follow route 17 east to get onto route 30 only 10miles maybe from hancock. the route 30 also known as "the adirondack trail" well i guess i have to found it out myself then. so,.here's my planing route: from clifton-rides on route 32 (rode here 4times up to hih point and port jervis)-then to port jervis-continue on rt 97 for hancock-then to rt 30 all the way up to malone (over 300mile) i'll be making a detour to checking out white face mtn summit in willmington after that continue to malone-then bike route #11 for niagara-continued rides along erie lakes all the way to cleveland-then couples turn for rail trail to connect with great alleghenyy passage and then connect with C&O canal trail all the way down to maryland-then delaware-then phillys-trenton-and D&R for new brunswick-then go home... thanks, anyway! |
I have ridden on NY 30 between Margaretville and Downsville. That's a great biking road! It'll probably work for you, too.

I would love to see your tour in pics and words at CGOAB or some other place. |
Crazy Guy is also a fun place to research routes. Here is somebody who rode for a day on NY 30:

I guess you mean NJ Rte 23, not 32. Going to Niagra from Hancock, via Malone is quite a detour.
I would love to see your tour in pics and words at CGOAB or some other place. my bad. i will pos some pics for sure maybe some story too. |
I have ridden much of Route 30 at various times. It's a pretty good route. The only part that really sucks IMO is riding through Amsterdam NY where RT-30 is a busy main thoroughfare through the city. The road is a little rough for a few miles just south of Schoharie Reservoir( 2 years ago). Between Roxbury and Stamford is a nice little rail trail that follows Rt-30
