Trek 700

I keep looking for a bike suitable for touring - long chain stays and braze-on on forks for front low riders.
I know that vintage MTBs like Trek 850 and Specialized Stumjumper, etc., make the top of the list but I came across an almost new TREK 700 with the fork braze ons.
It seems to be a '99 model with blue/black color, 700c wheels with Bontrager tires and the undesirable items are an adjustable comfort stem and twist shifters coupled to a plastic display indicating the gear - the only things I might have to replace.
I know that only the seat tube is chromoly and the rest of the bike is high-ten steel. How bad is this to disqualify it as a touring bike?

Hi tensile steel does not disqualify a bike as a touring bike; it does make the bike heavier than it needs to be. My very first tour was on a peugeot UO-10 made entirely out of hi tensile steel and I had a great time. Like you said, the most important features are sufficiently long chain stays and the right braze ons.
