Gator sidewall failure?

Hi
I run Ultra Gatorskins on my commuter and Gator Hardshells on my touring bike for the extra sidewall protection. Both 28mm.

I prefer the ride feel of the Gatorskins. The difference is slight but there; little bit harder, faster, less spongy...

I've never had a sidewall fail on these tires - or any other tires for that matter.
What I'm considering now for the touring bike is putting a Gatorskin on the front and a Hardshell on the rear.

Am I correct in assuming that sidewall failure is likelier on the rear tire? Except for a handlebar bag, i have all my gear on the rear rack.

What typically causes sidewall failure? I can imagine a rocky path causing damage. Anything else?

Thanks!

Continental's poor quality control? I had the sidewall detach from the bead on a 700c x 28mm Continental Ultra Gatorskin. The only time I've been left stranded and out of cell phone range. It's the reason I switched to Vittoria tires on my touring bike...

Or, Road hazards.. or too long carrying too much weight.

Under/over inflated?

On tours I Bring a 3rd tire..
