Road, or Hybrid? Which brand?
 

Hi all,

I'm looking at putting road/hybrid tyres on my Triumph MTB.

But, which one would be better? I've got experience riding with hybrid tyres - as my father's mountain bike had hybrids, and I nicked them for transportation while my tyres were being repaired and serviced.

I found them to be an incredibly smooth ride, now that I've got my old MTB tyres back on, I can feel every damn bump in the road - and let me tell you, New Brunswick isn't exactly the most cycle-friendly place when it comes to roads.

Dad needs a new rear tyre anyway.

But, if I were to go with road tyres - which I've no experience with. What are the advantages of using road tyres?

Lastly, what are some good brands of road and hybrid tyres? My LBS carries a good number of road and hybrid tyres. Brands like Bontrager are found there, at least on their website.

You've got the knobbies so go the other extreme for tarmac. Smooth, light, puncture resistant. My experience with Maxxis has been good. Vitorria too has a good rep.

What brands does your favorite LBS Sell ? they all come off the same boat from Asia, Now.

it's a long ways from where I'm At, ours is..

It's the locality that's the issue. Given that we're not that close to the nearest LBS - which is an hour away by car and approximately five hours by bike. And I don't own a car, therefore frequent LBS visits is something that isn't an option at the moment.

We do not have a MEC Store in this province, no. I'll be paying my LBS a visit next Tuesday to ask about all the questions I have.

You have to put together any bike shipped to you as they are knocked down to fit in the box .

many brands only sell thru dealers .. so an hour on the Bus may be the better approach ..

call them on the phone if they have no website...

You are better off getting a bike selected to fit you and your needs, in person, realistically.

Bus trips are ridiculously expensive. 25 bucks a ticket to the city where my LBS is located. Can't go there and back in the same day, and I'd have to spend another 25 on a ticket home.

I'm planning on going in and seeing them and getting a bike sized for me. Just so I have all the measurements and such. I know my frame size is 21.5" - that's just measuring from the crank to the top of the seat post.

I'll get the guys in the LBS to look at it and see what they can do as far as tyres go. Will let you all know how I get on.

You can always order from MEC and get free delivery (over $50). I like the Continental touring tires myself.
