Atlanta to Chattanooga (or vice versa)
I'm planning a ride from Atlanta (downtown, not the northern burbs) to Chattanooga via rt 41 (and old rt 41) mostly. When I run the google maps directions and choose biking, it does not send you that way, it takes you pretty far west, through Rome, GA.
Just curious if anyone has done the ride and has recommendations on the route. I'm not sure which direction I'll ride it. I'm planning on using the Groome Transportation van shuttle to take me one direction. Thanks! Jon |
Looks like it is sending you along part of the Silver Comet Trail to Rockmart, from which I heard, is an outstanding path and fully paved and avoids the roads of the Atlanta suburbs.
Edit: Georgia bike route 35 takes you almost right from Atlanta to Chattanooga. GDOT in their "wisdom" has removed the cue sheets and maps from this route but archive.org still has them. http://web.archive.org/web/200606161...ps/index.shtml |
The Silver Comet and Rome route is only 8 miles longer than the Old Rt 41 route. Old 41 is very close to I-75 for a big part of the stretch, which means you're going to have more traffic. I would definitely take the SC out to Rockmart and head north from there, you'll be a bit further out in the country with hopefully less traffic. One change I would make to the route close to downtown though... to get to South Cobb Dr from downtown, definitely take Marietta St/Perry Blvd instead of Hollywood Rd, it's a much better choice for a bike. I commute from Austell/Smyrna to downtown (right by the Hard Rock Cafe) every day, so I've tried all the routes. :)

Don't know about 41, but most of the time when there's a nearby parallel interstate (like I-75), the old road traffic is pretty light.
27 is mostly wide and lightly trafficed. The exception is the 15 miles or so from Cedartown up past Rome, where it's a mess of high-speed, heavy traffic rushing to and from I-75. It's a zoo again from Fort Oglethorpe into Chattanooga. (Of course, 41 through East Ridge matches the "zoo-ness".) 193 from Lafayette up through Flintstone is pretty nice, as long as you avoid school and rush hour traffic. |
Last month I took 41 (mostly) from Atlanta to Adel, GA. South of Cordele, it is a peanut's field away from 75, and like you said, no traffic. I could even read the billboards on 75 most of the way.
Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure if I can get to it this year as the days are already getting shorter, so it may be next spring before I have an update :) |
