I carried full video gear on my tour from DC to Pittsburgh to Toronto. Video inside.

Hi all.

This summer I added a twist to my annual tour by going solo, unsupported, and with full video production gear. I used a VO porteur rack and ILE rack bag with Pelican case foam insert to carry my video gear.

The goal was to inspire others to try bicycle touring. Would love for the bikeforum touring community to check it out!

Any comments and questions are welcomed.

Nice job!

digibud 10-12-13 02:32 AM

Ridiculously well done. Your willingness to place your camera in creative positions and the combination of still and moving perspectives were great. There were a couple of underexposed clips that could probably have used some minimal boosting in post but in general I think you did a really great job.

Hi Levi,
loved your bike and your movie.
May I add a link from it, on my local Australian bike forum to inspire?
http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/index.php
Cheers

Hmmmmm not sure I'm expressing that correctly.
I'm asking if its ok if on my local forum, I add a link to your clip.
Yep that looks better - lol.

Awesome! Should be somehow well publicized to inspire the couch/TV/iPhone bound young folks!
You have some very nice equipment, including the bike racks and the camp chair. Where is the details on those?
Also, was the scene at 3:30 shot from a kite?

Aerohip 10-12-13 10:08 AM

Wow....great Job, it really makes me want to go out for a ride. Right now.

2travelers 10-12-13 10:16 AM

Great job Levi. Thanks for all the time and effort you out into this great video.

jhawk 10-12-13 02:42 PM

Really great job Levi! :) Loved it. How did you like the front rack and bag that you had? (I'm not sure what you call the bag, or the rack). Would you recommend that bag and rack, over a set of front panniers?

Thanks,

Jack.

spinnaker 10-12-13 04:58 PM

Really nice job. Some awfully unique shots and angles. How did you get the shots of you riding? Did you place the camera and come back for it or did you have an assistant?

I wish you would have given me a holler once here in Pittsburgh. Lots of good video here, maybe you got it, just couldn't fit it into your short clip. We have Bicycle Heaven here. I think that place has a whole documentary content on it's own.

Quemal 10-12-13 06:51 PM

Excellent video.

djb 10-12-13 07:02 PM

well done, good editing, fun to watch. I dont think most people realize the time and effort it takes to do something like this. Always being aware visually of a good shot opportunity, setting up camera, riding past camera, coming back to pick up and pack up stuff. Not to mention the editing...

most important thing you accomplished- it was fun to watch and the variety of shots and the editing avoided it being monotonous. I see you popped in one of those superwide, "toss in the air" shots, nice with the water there.

cheers.

IAMAMRA 10-12-13 07:04 PM

Sweet!! I hope it is ok that I shared it on my blog.

LeeG 10-12-13 09:46 PM

That was wonderful. Joy, texture and capability.

lwik 10-12-13 11:51 PM

Bravo dude. I am also planning a trip and deciding what film gear to take with. Was thinking my 7D with a few lenses and and a GOPro like you had mentioned. Great solo trip.

koolerb 10-13-13 08:55 AM

Over 100 miles per day for ten days fully loaded. I'm impressed. Good video.

Thanks! Still working on color correction and proper exposure (trying to use the manual dslr setting only)

Glad you liked it! Please add it everywhere you want... I'm really trying to get it out there. The overall goal is to promote bicycle travel.

I'm really trying to get this video out there. Make it go viral at least within the online cycling community. ****** has really helped so far. The video made it to the front page of the video sub****** which garnered over 10,000 views in 2 days. Traffic has slowed down since. Around 50 views a day. Looking for new ways to promote it online. Any suggestions are appreciated. Rear bike rack: Tubus Cargo. Front rack: Velo Orange Porteur Rack with ILE Rack bag. Camp Chair: Alite folding chair. It's super light and packable. The scene at 3:30 was from throwing my gopro as high as a could while trying to minimize spin. Risky but rewarding... Thanks for watching!

Appreciate your kind words. I really loved the front rack and bag combo. The rack is the Velo Orange Porteur and the bag is the ILE rack bag. I used the front rack bag set up because of all the camera equipment I carried. Easy access and lots of space for foam to protect the gear. Having all that weight up front and above the wheel does make the bike a bit difficult to manoeuvre when pushing or parking. A double leg kickstand with a wheel lock would fix that, though. I think panniers up front would make the ride quality better, but it is also more difficult to access items stored there. The rack bag was perfect for my camera gear, though. Great for city commuting also.

The shots of riding were Les Stroud style. Ride ahead, set up the shot, ride back, ride past, ride back, pack up the camera. I think it added at least 2 extra days to the trip! Wish I had more time to spend in Pittsburgh. I could tell there was so much more to explore but I was on a tight schedule unfortunately.

Thanks muchly! It did take a lot of effort to stop and set up shots when you are tired from long consecutive days of riding. And of course, the editing took many hours!

Do it! 7D and Gopro would make an even better combo than my T4i and Gopro.

Over 100 km* a day (Canadian here). I did have a 160km day but usually 100 miles is too much for me!

Also, I posted another video here a few months back but it didn't receive much feedback. Also, aimed at promoting bike travel. Go By Bike

Thank you for sharing these outstanding videos. Well done.
In your Go By Bike Video, could you please tell me the route taken and what campground you stayed at. It looks very familiar to me but can't quite put a finger on the area.
Thank you.
