Lake Champlain - leaving cars.
Is there a safe place to leave cars around Lake Champlain (NY,VT)?
I will be riding around the lake and for 3-4 days and need to leave the car someplace safe. |
let's go orange! (i'm from 'cuse)
i'd find a nicer hotel in your starting area, and talk to the manager about what you're doing and if you can leave your car in their well-lit, monitored lot. that way there might be security cameras and definitely people around and always someone at the front desk. i wouldn't leave it in a state park parking lot or a grocery store or anything like that. |
Ping VT_Speed_TR. He lives right near the lake and might have some ideas.

PM me, you can leave your car at my house. i'm about 12 miles east of Burlington in perfect riding area.

I did a 3-day tour over Labor Day weekend and left my car at the Park and Ride lot in Colchester (north of Burlington). Didn't have any problems. You can also park at Perkins Pier in Burlington for $10 a night, but I think they have a 3-day maximum. http://www.enjoyburlington.com/Parks/PerkinsPier.cfm

You could try the parking lot behind the library in Shelburne. I left mine there as part of a 6-day organized tour, but I'm not sure if they'd discriminate.

You can leave your car at most of the hotels in the Burlington area (except downtown in the parking decks) for free. The hotel lots are filled with Canadian cars all the time. The Canadians come down to Burlington to fly on vacation due to the cheaper air fares. They just stay a night in the hotel, leave the car, and take the hotel shuttle to the airport.
I'd stay away from the Park & Rides, there have been a number of cases recently were someone is cutting off the catalytic converters on cars there over night. |
Twice I left my car at the Crown Point Tourist Information Center, right at the western end of the Crown Point Bridge. I asked permission in advance, and left contact information with the staff there. No problems at all.
|
I did ACA's Cycle Vermont. We left our cars at a UVM garage up the hill from the center of Burlington. You might check with them to make special arrangements. We parked there in the summer, so there might not be availability during the school term, but it can't hurt to ask.

There's so much open land here & the people are very friendly. I'm sure you won't have trouble finding a place, where every you start.

Everyone! Look above. VT_SPEED_TR has kindly agreed to allow the OP to park in his driveway. So unless the OP has plans for another city or plans fall through then I don't see the need for any more suggestions. A private driveway seems like a good deal to me.
And add to the fact that the OP has not responded to this thread is another reason to cease suggestions. |
VT_Speed_TR, thanks for the offer. I am going to see about the Crown Point Visitor's center.
I would rather leave cars south as it will save a couple hrs drive time for me and partner coming over from Plymouth, NH. |

I contacted the Lake Champlain Visitors Center, must be close to the Crown Point one.
They allow over-nite parking as long as your parking does not interfere with motor-homes maneuvering through their lot. They also suggested the Walmart lot in Ticonderoga. As an aside, the woman at the LCVC mentioned they have information and guides for cycling in the area. |
The Shorham Inn B&B used to host bike tourers all the time. I would stop in there for sure and ask. They were wonderful people when we toured there!

Well I went around the lake last weekend. First tour under my belt.
Fantastic weather if a bit breezy. Thank you all for reaching out with your suggestions. |
