I have a 2007 Jamis Nova - back when Jamis called it a cross bike but most people used it as a do everything bike. I think the Aurora is what it has evolved to. 6 years and numerous tours later I couldn't have asked for a better bike.
I use it as a commuter, light tourer (28mm tires), heavy tourer (37mm tires), off road tourer (37mm travel contacts), shopping bike and just all round fun bike. Yes, I have swapped out quite a few components - Brooks B17, Sugino 48-36-24 crank, 105 long cage derailleur with a 12-30 cassette, wheels. Every time I have a look around at new touring bikes and get that new bike lust I know it wouldn't do anything my old Nova couldn't do now. In fact, we just got back from a quick 9 day fully loaded trip in the French Alps.

Go on. Get the Aurora. I got mine when I was 40 and I wish I'd got it when I was 20.

I opted for the budget build over the Aurora. It's close enough to done to post a pick. It will be completed for about half the cost of the clearance priced Aurora. Still deciding on weather or not to do fenders. But I guess for a touring bike fenders are probably a necessity.

The bike is done. I'm reusing the original brakes and may swap them out later on but it is ready to ride. First ride is going to be about 60 miles out, camp overnight, and back. Can't wait to road test it.

Looks good. The only thing I would add would be a set of fenders, but certainly not a necessity.

Happy riding!

koolerb, If you have DP calipers, they should perform well. I think it's a good deed to rebuild an older appropriate bicycle to perform a new task, good job.

Encounter any*Hills and you may want to swap that stock 30t on the crankset, for something smaller.

* Long or Steep ..
