Loop Tour in Iowa?

Has anyone done a loop tour of Iowa? Thinking about trying this from the NE side of the state in '14. 7 or 8 days, hitting the Field of Dreams along the way.

Could you look back at some of the past RAGBRAI routes and put something together that way by connecting two or more from previous years?

Here is a link to Jeff Teel, he did a tri-point tour that included part of Iowa. Here is a link to the CGOAB search for Iowa Loop Tour. A lot of good information from those that have gone before...

If I was doing a tour like that I'd start out in LaCresent, MN... a short 25 miles hop with great scenery down Hwy 26 into Iowa... follow the Mississippi down for half the trip and then work my way inland and back north towards Decorah and then back over to the start.

This years RAGBRAI went through Keosauqua and a couple of other cool historic towns along the Des Moines river, but that's way south almost to Missouri

I'm partial to the Driftless Area....YMMV

If something like that would suit you I can go into more detail on specific roads.

I love cycling the Driftless area, as well. I originally was going to do this plan last year, 2013, but chose to ride the routes marked out in Trempealeau County ( https://www.ridebctc.com/BikeBrochurePage1.html ) This year I want to get into Iowa and see the Field of Dreams. I think it would be too far for me to do from home in all the way and back in a week. Thinking I would leave the car in a state park near the NE corner of Iowa and loop down, around and back to the car. La Crosse/La Crescent would fit that bill.

Thanks for the replies!

I'd be interested in the route you select as this is something I should try as well. Actually touring routes with maps and notes might make a good sticky in the touring section.

You could be on US Highway 20, at least part of it, to reach the Field of Dreams. We rode Highway 20 across Iowa in 2007, and there were some good sections and some scary sections. However, 20 is worth considering for part of your loop.

I recommend getting to the Field of Dreams really early in the morning. We got there just after sunrise, and my wife and I had the place to ourselves. It is definitely worth the visit. It was also a good time for pictures, good light and no people.

I usually include pictures with my posts, but for the Field of Dreams, you will just have to go get your own

Here is the Iowa Bike Map. There are lots of options to get to Dyersville to the Field of Dreams.

While it was many years ago, we camped in the city park in Dyersville. Maybe they still allow it. Had no interest in seeing the field. I have never even seen the film. Plus, it was 101 degrees when we arrived in town.

There are quite a few options in NE Iowa. Depending on the route that you decide on, OLD Highway 20 (Not the 4 lane) is a good road to ride. I live in Waterloo, which is 1 hour west of Dyersville so if you need local assistance with anything just send me a PM.

FWIW, Field of Dreams is at the center of a lawsuit.
