Cycle-Touring Meetup App Idea

Hi all,

Not sure whether such an application exists... But, if so, do feel free to point me in the direction of it and delete this thread as you please.

I'm no expert on programming/app design, I just simply have an idea and would like the community's feedback.

This morning, while talking article-generation for my website with my Father, we came up with an idea for an application - available to both Android and iPhone cycle-tourists.

This app... You would essentially have to create a username and password in order to log into it (It may or may not be a payable service - I haven't got that far yet), it's just an idea. During the sign-up process, you'd input your current State/Province/City - as a "Home" location. And then, once you plan where you're going on your tour, you could see who else is going on tour in that particular area - for instance, if you're heading across Canada, and are heading into Quebec City in Quebec, and I'm doing a tour near the Quebec border - you'd send me a message (or vice versa), asking whether I'd like to meet up, have a beer, a bit of a chat, take some photographs, compare bicycles, swap stories, etc...

The application would be made available for usage Worldwide.

I'm well aware that sites such as WarmShowers/CouchSurfing exist as far as accommodation goes, and posting your touring plans on websites is all very well and good, but sometimes you're met with no response. However, I've yet to find an application or website that is exclusively for cycle tourists who wish to meet other cycle-tourists while on the road. I appreciate that perhaps part of the fun of cycle-touring is that you never know who you're going to meet along the way, and perhaps such an application would murder the fun of that aspect of it.

Nonetheless, looking at it from a writer's perspective, it could be a huge thing in terms of article/content generation for a website or Journal on sites such as CrazyGuyOnABike, or others.

Feel free to tear the idea to pieces, as I've said, it's just an idea and I'm not looking at developing such an application just yet - I'd just like to know what the community thinks of such an app.

Cheers,

Jack.

(Feel free to move to Touring if more pertinent).
