Clipless

Are all you touring guys pretty much clipless? I'm starting a light touring build in January and that's the direction I'm going; thinking Speedplay Frogs.

Personally I like to go barefoot. I have a pair of MKS touring pedals and I like to grip the spindle with my big toe.

SmallFront 12-08-13 09:46 AM

Platform pedals for me. They are comfortable.

robow 12-08-13 10:43 AM

Mostly straight SPD because you can walk around in those fairly comfortably and not make a racket but also have some Shimano A530 pedals which gives me the option of riding without my cycling shoes on.

Thulsadoom 12-08-13 11:05 AM

For me:

Road touring=Looks.

Off-road=platform.

I use spd pedals with mtb shoes and spd sandals for touring, both are easy to walk in.

no, I'm not. If it matters to You, & your choice.

I made comments on pedals at this link, I am too lazy to retype the info.

SPD sandals and A530 pedals, like the other poster above. Probably about the most flexible option for touring under a variety of different conditions.

spinnaker 12-08-13 09:02 PM

SPD IMHO! :) Seriously as others have pointed out, they are the way to go. Easy to walk in, you probably could get by with just your bike shoes. But I prefer to carry a light weight pair of shoes for off bike. If I know it is going to be warm, I take the SPDs and sandals for off bike and in the shower. I it happens to get cold at night then I have the option of wearing the bike shoes.

I have to use platforms due to an injury, but I would use clipless if I could. The efficiency gain is enormous. I think it is grant pedersen who has written that most people never use the efficiency gain that spinning can give, and I think he is right because when I get onto a hard hill, i use the full circle, and it is like dropping nitrous. Grant suggests platforms or the straps you twist into.

Copied and pasted from the very recent Pedals thread ...

I use ...........

Shimano PD M324 ... on all my bicycles.

TeleJohn 12-09-13 07:10 AM

Got rid of my pedals as they are too heavy.
I just keep pushing off the ground with my feet.

lenA 12-09-13 07:15 AM

I don't use clipless because it bothers the people that do

 I`m going to start claiming that for my reason too!

No clips for me. No cleats either.

cyccommute 12-09-13 12:52 PM

Shimano M520 double sided mountain bike pedals and mountain bike shoes because it bothers the guys who ride platforms.

SmallFront 12-09-13 12:58 PM

It does?

Some really "brilliant" and "useful" posts there. Some people have way too much time on their hands

Search for "Nightshade". Clipless bothers the hell out of him.

Wow, lots going on here. I was expecting "yes" pretty much across the board. I just picked up the Frogs and some mountain shoes. Guess I will see how comfortable they are to walk in and go from there. Thanks!
