fietsbob 12-12-13 12:10 PM

My solid steel ruler doesn't quite do the job.

I was hoping for a reply from someone who happened to know, I will be ordering a clamp with the mounts for the rack built in. The current LHT uses a 30mm clamp, not sure if the bike I have does. I didn't realize there were so many different sizes out there.

generally steel frame seat tubes are 1.125" OD, ie 28.6mm.

China made digital vernier calipers are quite Cheap, now.

Email Surly. They are very good at responding. I emailed them twice with technical questions and got responses within 24 hrs.

If I remember correctly it's 30mm. I used a Salsa clamp when I built my bike, because it seems to be a little better engineered than Surly's. Measure if you can to verify.

I measured the seat tube of my 2006 LHT just below the seat post clamp. It was 29.6 mm using a calipers and machinist rule. The seat post clamp came with the frame when I bought the frameset, so I 'm not sure of the size. I'm assuming it is a 30 mm clamp. I'm not sure this helps or just confuses the issue.

Yeah -- if you have a Harbor Freight near you, you may be surprised to see just how cheaply calipers can be purchased. I have a set of their plastic utility calipers; they're plenty good enough for measuring seat post diameters, and they're only about $3.

I was going to suggest looking at the web site but didn't based on the mistaken (and apparently foolish) assumption that the OP had checked the web site and that the answer was not to be found there. Never again will I assume that someone has looked in the most obvious of places for an answer.

I had checked the site and saw the current model uses a 30mm clamp. My question was "What is the size of the seat post clamp on a 2006 LHT?"

I am going with the conclusion it is the same 30mm as the current model so that is what I ordered.
