handlebar bag space issue
Hello!
I purchased the Jandd "touring handlebar pak II" (from ebay, so no possibility to return!). I really like the bag, but when I tried to install it today on my Novara Safari with the butterfly/trekking handlebars, it doesn't quite fit in between the curve of the bar! The bag: http://www.jandd.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FTOR2 Does anybody have a suggestion for either somehow getting the Jandd Quick Release Bracket (which mounts over the stem) just a little bit further out (it really only needs barely half an inch or so- maybe some foam on the mounting spot to bulk it out a tiny bit?) or a favorite bar extender recommendation that can take the weight of a bag? Thanks! |
A 2nd stem stacked under the stem with the bars, is what I did.
Or you could also order one of these : http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/thorn-acc...deg-prod11041/ Longer extension .. http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/thorn-acc...deg-prod11040/ for a similar result.. |
Does the Jaand use a KilckFix mount or a proprietary mount? If the former, KlickFix makes an extender that allows for mounting on trekking/butterfly bars.

Can you unbolt the mounting hardware from the bag?

those KlickFix extenders seemed promising, but it looks like you can't get the half that attaches to the bag on it's own? So the only way to retrofit the bag would be to cannibalize from another bag. Or I suppose I could unbolt the mounting hardware from the bag and put a foam spacer of some sort in there... I'll have to experiment with that.
I may end up getting one of the thorn bars and mounting it under the stem; I also found this bar extender that looks similar-ish/ pretty sturdy. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ADIKZAFTSWMNW Thanks for all the suggestions! :) |
If the situation is that the bars interfere with the bag you can change the tilt of the bars. If you only need a half an inch you shouldn't need to change the tilt much. Of course you will have to see if you are comfortable with the bars at that orientation.

Rixen and Kaul make a basket adapter for their QR klickfix mount so you can use the extendable version. If you can rivet or bolt the bracket onto your bag you have an easy solution.

I ended up unscrewing the mounting hardware, taping together 4 layers of foam-core board (y'know, the kind you use for science fair presentations in elementary school!) in roughly the right shape, wrapping a cut-open ziplock around to make it fairly water-proof, and screwing the mount back on over the foam spacer!
It doesn't look super sleek, but it works! The only problem is that the new screws I used (the existing ones were too short) stick out a little in the bag. I'll just have to be careful not to snag my hand... Thanks for all the great ideas! |
