We like the Delorme gazetteer maps ( ale moc penÝze).
Čau, Paul.
FYA, when we rode from LA to Washington, D.C in 1977 we passed though Winchester on the second last day. I recall we rode over five "gaps" in the Shenandoah Mtns that day and met an Appalachian Trail hiker half way though his own personal journey, at one of the gaps. I thought it may have been called "Darby Gap," though I could not locate it on Google.

I recall Winchester as picturesque. That night, the last night on the road, we stayed at the Middleburg Inn in Middleburg, Va, where previously Liz Taylor had married John Warner. That trip was our honeymoon too.

I would suggest you look at the Adventure Cycling routes as their maps arequite good.
Did you purchase all segments L&C from Adv. cycling?
Do you know about cell service along this trail? I am considering whether to buy a GPS unit, or use my ATT iphone.

Thanks,

btw, when do you depart? We'll be starting in VA and make out way to St. Louis later....

Jim,
It's a nice small city, with some interesting history. Biking not so great here, but outside of Winchester some nice rides, pretty rolling hills, apple orchards, historic plantations, wineries.

Some local and county fire departments will let you camp in their yards and use their showers; also some truck stops will let you camp on their premises but the showers will cost you.

Thanks for your reply and best wishes for your trip. Are you going to post a Journal?

I recently posted to another touring thread:

I bookmarked this post a few years ago because IMO, it really captured the spirit of cycle-touring:

Also, what's the hurry? One of the joys of touring is the singleness of purpose and absence of demands. All you have to do is get there: you don't have to get there fast or get their first - and if you are touring with camping gear, odds are you can be incredibly flexible about what "getting there" means on any given day. Embrace that. Don't let your tour become an exercise in trading one rat-race for another.
BTW, since you are from Virginia and I am from Boston, my quoted reply above was to a post describing a tour from South Carolina to Virginia, with a stop in Williamsburg. I mentioned in my reply my own recollection from Williamsburg:

Hi Paul,
Well, I guess I might be biking through your area in mid/late August. Can you give me some contact info so I can call/mail/stop by? =)
Please respond to my e-mail (najman.honza(at)gmail.com) as I might not check the forum while I'm on the road.

Thanks
Honza
