Venice to Prague route suggestions?

so this summer ms. rollo and I are biking from Rome to Stockholm. the section that is seeming the most unclear at the moment is the mentioned Venice to Prague. we'd prefer not to outright climb into the Tyrol and scale the Alps but unsure what the eastern route to Trieste and into Slovenia looks like either. any helpful suggestions are appreciated.
thanks
Rollo

Venice >to> Prague

Vienna, upstream on the Danube bike way, by the river shore .. turn north at Linz Austria ..

..coming south from Prague , Linz was where I intersected the River..

so consider the reverse .. ;)

I would probably go through Italy through Trieste and enter Croatia going through Karlovac working toward Zagreb. Then head north/northeast Varazdin. From there head directly toward Vienna and start traversing north-northwest toward Prague.

Heading through Slovenia easterly so as not to pass through the Alps (or the Julian Alps in Northern Slovenia/Southern Austria) and heading toward Varazdin is also a good route, staying south of Maribor as it's hilly country there as well (some number of ski resorts around Maribor).

It really depends on how hill/mountain averse you are.... Living in Denver, there are is no shortage of grades for practicing on though....

Prague is my fav city in all of those I've travelled in Central/South East Europe (though there are some other very honorable mentions!). Having lived in that area for +7 years, I can say there is a lot of beautiful landscape to take in.

I should mention that there are some mighty stout hills coming out of Trieste heading into Croatia (though there can be some hefty tail winds coming off the Adriatic). Trieste is a nice port town and *very* bike friendly. Just plan on taking your bikes inside wherever you go!

OP: I can't translate that, but if you go in that general direction there is a bike route from outside of Bassano del Grappa to Trento. Some of it is bike path and other parts traffic lite roads. Follow the road on the west side of the Brenta north from Campese and you will run into it at a pizzeria/bar. Very pretty riding.

For the Vienna to Prague section I recommend looking into going through Brno instead of Linz. Brno is a great college town and the southern CR is better than Linz. I guess you would have to pick between Cesky Krumlov and Brno.
