Volun-touring - Volunteering and Touring, Canada 2015.

Hi all,

Next year, I will be cycling across the country and volunteering along the way, using various volunteering organisations along the way, such as WWOOF and HelpX.

I'm wondering whether the community has any experience volun-touring? Does anyone have any specific experience in Canada?

Any advice for a first-time volun-tourist?

Many thanks,

Jack.

Try the Legion. They are always seeking volunteers for events they put on. Plus you will probably get some food out of it too.

Try stopping in at information centres and ask what is going on in the near future. Most of the people there seem to know whats on the go in the region

Excellent response. Thank you, Sparky!

I'll be sure to send you a PM when I'm in AB, perhaps we can have a beer!

Jack, how long do you figure your cross country tour is going to be? any ideas on when you might leave?

Hi Lucky,

I'm thinking early/mid March in terms of departure - it will all depend on what the weather is like here.

In terms of travel time to go straight across... Looking broadsword, I have about seven months. From March - September. But, I want to get a winter volunteering position nailed down. That will allow me to say, "Okay. So, I've got a winter gig in... Vancouver, starting on x date"... I have seven months to get across the country. And will plan accordingly. Or, "My winter gig is in Alberta, and I have to be there by x date... Great. I can now plan accordingly in terms of how much time I spend cycling and how much time I spend volunteering."

That's my train of thought, anyway.
