Fender recommendations
 

I'm in the process of doing some refitting on LHT. I plan on using it for one gravel ride, stripped down, then setting it back up for touring. I was never completely satisfied with the Planet Waves attachment system on the current fenders

I ride on 26" wheels with 1.85 tires. Pricey is OK

Maybe help us help you by telling us what you didn't like about your fenders? There's pros and cons to everything.

I just put SKS fenders on my 26" mountain bike and I like them, but you may not.

I like my planet bike fenders, I have them on 3 bikes.

I really like longboard fenders, but I think they are only 700c.

There are stainless steel and aluminum ones .. lovely looking, and fine if the bike stays on local tour loops
the brevet guys love the look .

but, I used SKS chromoplast .

when I have to pack the bike to fly to a trip start , the rear one gets slipped on its strut to contact the tire

in the box , so it wont be damaged in the cargo hold.

heavy duty, solidly mounted fenders that will work with a fully loaded touring bike without flopping around on rough roads and have good clearance for 26X1.85

I have had good luck with SKS. I have had them on at least three bikes. I have also used Planet bike, the regular ones as well as Cascadia with the built in mud flap. All are plastic and have withstood a lot of abuse with no issues. Also, the plastic ones are relatively cheap.

I have some Velo-Orange aluminum fenders that I like. I still found them fiddly to set up, but I do think they are more stable than the plastic (SKS, maybe?) fenders I replaced. One thing I wish I'd done was get them bigger than I needed them. My tires have gotten fatter and fatter as the years have gone by, and now my fenders have less clearance and take less jostling before they rub against the tire. Also on rough road, they rattle. There are things to be done to lessen the rattle, but some parts of the attachment system are loose by design, so I don't know if you can ever eliminate the gravel road rattle.

is there a big difference between 700c vs 26" fenders? ANyone tried to fit the 700c fender for a 26" bike?

I went to fatter too and had the same issues.

Some things just stick in your craw out there on the long miles of back roads. Last trip... sloppy fenders :-)

Regardless of the fender, get them with the "safety release" fork mounts. They can save a lot of grief if something gets jammed between the wheel and the fender. I can tell you from experience that it does happen.

the 4 struts per mudguard, + the frame direct mounts do keep them from flopping around ..

you do have to see to it bolts get kept tightened..

the Koga WTR with 26" wheels, I got, came with SKS Mudguards ..

I use 1.75" tires on it .

Per Rivendell the longboards work with 26" wheels just need to replace front flap with a shorter one.

Except, those fenders are too narrow for the tires the OP rides. 45mm fenders do not cover 47mm tires well. For 26 x 1.85"/47mm, the SKS P55 are the right fit. Not available in Longboards, but you can retrofit the long mudflap.
