Google maps off line on Nexus tablet

Before last summer's tour, I bought a Nexus 7 to have access to Google maps off line; I could store 6 large tiles at once, which was enough to stay at least a couple of days ahead, so I'd be ok if I didn't have wifi for a day. There's been an upgrade (I'm not sure when, as I wasn't using mapping for a while) which broke offline map storage; now I can only store 1 much smaller map tile, so that I do many rides that won't fit on the maps I can store on my tablet.

The upgrade also broke OSMAND, but I was able to reload that, and I have all of North America's Open Street Maps stored. However, I don't like their mapping nearly as much. Is there an app that will allow me to store 6 tiles of Google Maps locally (or more than 6)? I'm happy to pay for it, but I do want Google Maps.

Thanks.

My google map embeds no longer work but Wordpress offered a suggestion that rectifies the issue with the new google engine. It worked for me, try this. Http://en.support.wordpress.com/google-maps/

Good luck

Or you could try OSMAnd. It's free, and you can download up to 10 maps free as well. The unlimited version is a few dollars, and lets you download unlimited maps worldwide, plus wikipedia data for the map.

Some places Google maps has better coverage, in other places OSM is more reliable. I use both, but in many 3rd world countries, OSM seems substantially better.

I was in the same position - I used Google offline maps quite a bit on last summer's tour and was also bummed the way google made that mode pretty much useless with the update. So I have been looking around a bit and OSMand seems a viable alternative, if a little ugly and a rather unintuitive interface. So far that's what I'm going with for next summer's plans.

I use MapFactor Navigator... Google Maps it ain't but it works pretty well and is free.

You can still cache maps for offline in google maps by typing "ok maps" in the search bar. Unfortunately, I don't know if there's a way to see what you've already cached.

You can still cache maps, sort of, but it's like carrying a mapbook which may, or may not, spontaneously disappear at any time. Not much use in a pinch, is it?

OSMAnd has been mentioned. I am a huge fan of Locus, as it seems more polished and the author is always adding cool new features. Both are good apps for Android (and may have i-versions? not sure).

If you go the offline route, don't miss these custom hiking and biking maps: openandromaps - Hike'n Bike maps for Android (site seems down at the moment)
They are based on the openstreetmap data but with special additions and themes just for cycle tourists and other outdoor recreation.
Be sure to support the project with a cappuccino (or more)...

I have an Xperia Z Ultra (on sale right now!), it must be fairly similar to the Nexus. But offline Google Maps still works with the latest updates, I can log atleast a couple months worth of offline maps on it.

Be careful. I thought the same thing, then noticed that the offline maps had magically disappeared, just when I needed them!

Haha true, I regret every time I apply a system update.

I'll just use screen capture on my phone, and save in photos. No tracking of course, but it's even viewable in airplane mode.

The Maps with Me app is probably your best choice.
