Disc Trucker and BoB trailor

Looking at the rear hook up on the Surly website I began to wonder if the BoB axle fit in that frame?

Anyone with a Disc Trucker have a BoB?

If you had emailed Surly, you'd likely have gotten the answer I did today:

"the fork end of the trailer yoke will indeed run into the dropout on the Disc Trucker. I’m afraid I can’t recommend any modification to the frame but I can recommend any of our other bikes for use with the BOB trailer"

Apparently Surly never thought of hitching a Yak to a DT - and why would they, since the whole point of a touring frameset is to adequately support racks and panniers.

I think a simple workaround may be to use washers under the QR heads and move the interfering rack fork tips outwards beyond the widest part of the DT dropout. If this isn't enough, then I'd try a BOB Santana QR and fabricate some 5mm x 20mm shim discs with center hole for the skewer. The Yak fork can be bent slightly wider to fit a tandem-width (145mm) skewer with little effort.

PS - Surly didn't say if they tested DT compatibility with BOB Nutz or the std QR skewer. If for some reason they used the Nutz, then the std QR skewer may work. The Nutz locate the fork 15mm from the dropout face, and the std QR skewer locates the fork 20mm from the dropout face.

You can measure the distance required for clearance on your new DT. I'm curious to know just how wide the dropout is at widest point near the chainstay joint. It can't be much more than 15-20mm beyond the dropout face.

My thought: Santana tandems may have a wider setup to offer..,
so as to clear the disc caliper..

Or a long solid axle .. another try at oversize width..

axle nuts + BoB nutz on both sides..

29er fork on the trailer..

I've gotten a Chariot Trailer hooked up to my Disc Trucker without too much difficulty; the QR skewer and the ball/socket mount fit just fine. There is an extra nylon safety strap that is supposed to wrap around the chainstay. Since there is so much extra steel around the dropouts for the disc brake mounts, its a little tight, but it definitely works.

Similar problem

Any update on this?

I got a Surly Disc Trucker 2013 with a Tubus Logo Evo rack and a B.o.B Yak trailer.
The trailer fits just fine using the standard QR skewer without the Tubus rack.
With the rack, it doesn't.

I'm thinking of putting some spacers between the frame and the QR skewer to get the trailer further away from Tubus rack tubes. This might require a longer QR skewer to get enough distance to let the trailer move up and down freely.

Would this be a safe solution?
Has someone done it this or some other way?
Any better suggestions?

Shimano's Tandem hubs and so tandem Skewers are about 145 wide ..

santana rear-spread I thought i read was 160..

cannot be that someone who has done this for you to write about my review..

I have a 2 wheel trailer. for utility around town. had a BoB 10 years ago & shed it .

Sure I can get a 145mm or 160mm skewer for the trailer. BoB makes those too.
But is it safe to use spacers between the chainstays and the skewer to increase the width?
I don't want my back wheel to fall off while cycling in the middle of nowhere.

a big thick spacer which is as big around as the QR skewer itself, should be OK..
skewers work in compression when they are in tension.

someones bike in the LBS , seen this weekend, had their rear rack fitted to the axle skewer
with some pretty thick spacers..

+ you can carry a second skewer in the bottom of your pannier,
or in the bag in the trailer, they don't weigh much .

hubs axle is unchanged, all you add is the trailer fork .

the plan to carry elk carcasses ? Hunters get BoB trailers here.

A BoB 145mm skewer will not close down enough to fit 135mm dropouts - I've tried it.

It's not a good idea to use spacers - ideally you want the QR skewer to get a good grip on the dropout face, so there's no movement. I think you could make it work, but I personally would be leery of the trailer mount loosening when you whipped through tight curves.

I've used BoB Nutz too, perhaps they'd work better on Trucker WRT to giving more clearance from dropout. Of course you'd need a solid axle rear hub to use the Bob Nutz. I have a SDT, but never tried attaching my Yak (now gone) to it.

I'm wondering why you want to use a BoB Yak with a Surly LHT/DT, since the whole idea of having a touring frame is to provide the capability of fitting proper racks to mount panniers. Yak makes perfect sense as a carrying solution for a std bike, but you've wasted money on the Trucker if you never intended to use racks/panniers.

I have Ortlieb back-roller panniers for the bike too. Depending on where I am going, I want to be able to use either trailer/panniers or both.

On My 2004 Koga WTR I have Tubus Logo Racks, and its fine with My skewer mounted Burly Trailer
even with the Back Roller bags on it ..

Though I have to remove the pannier over the hitch to install or remove it.

<guess> now you have several combinations to wait for someone else
to have all the elements in place at once,
to test your desires out for you, before you feel secure enough to try it your self,

An LHT Disc frame, a particular trailer, a particular rack and the same panniers ..

hope you are patiently waiting. it may be a while, maybe Godot has all that ..

You guessed it, I am a hunter too. Shotgun + shells + extra clothes fit the trailer nicely
But while elk hunting, we use a quad bike to move the carcasses.

I guess I'll have to try the spacer option if I can find or make suitable spacer parts.

Ok, so I custom made the spacers and bought a Santana size Bob quick release.
Today I finally got it all together and did I short test ride. Seems to work fine. The structure feels solid.
Original Bob fork works as it is just fine. It is so flexible that the extra width doesn't matter.

I asked about this also in LBS and they also said it's ok to use spacers in the QR skewer.

Now it's just a matter of waiting for the summer vacation so I can go touring.
