Recommended Cantilever Brakes to Use with Rhynolites
I'm hoping to get some recommendations from some riders who know more than I do. I have recently built a Surly LHT. I'm running 26" Sunrims Rhynolite rims that measure 28mm wide at the braking surface. I ordered Avid Shorty 6 cantilever brakes to give me the best chance of getting enough clearance for wider/taller knobbies when I want to use them as well as fenders and my Luxos U front lamp. However, when installing the brakes, I found that I was unable to use any of the concave/convex washers to control the cant angle of the brakepads. The brakes are on the bike, and they do stop it well enough, but they ALWAYS squeal hideously. I took the bike to the local (and very reputable) LBS to solve a derailleur issue, and thought to ask about the brakes while there, the mechanics said that the rims were too wide for what I had if I wanted to be able to do any fine adjustments, and that I should choose a different brake model.
Any recommendations? Thanks! |
Tektro CR720 MIGHT work.

Magura HS33 is my favorite rim brake now.. this is their latest upgraded model HS33 R*| MAGURA
I have trekking bars on that bike , so the brake lever is perfect there. the issue the mechanics may have noted the brake boss spread is too narrow on the fork and rear stay .. for the wide rim you chose.. As that data was not shared , so I have no Idea of what that is .. |

I am using VO Zeste canti's on my Hunq with the 700x28 rims. They are absolutely great. Extra adjustment points, stopping power up the wazoo and no squeel.

In a word Paul's these things offer tons of clearance and will snap your head off on a emergency stop. I use them on my casenroll all winter long with fenders and they work great. Take the time to set them up right and they will not disappoint. Paulscomponents.com
