Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I rode the Salsa Vaya over the weekend in my size and it was such a treat - so steady and smooth, but still lively even with the 2" tires the store had. I felt comfortable in the drops and didn't worry about taking my hands off the handlebars even with 18mph wind gusts.

I bought the last 50cm Travel model available and will be grabbing the bike this weekend. (The frames are still available in 50cm if anyone else is interested, and the 2013 Vaya 2 that I test rode is on sale for $1350 from Paradise Garage in Columbus).

HNBD! One of the wrenches at my LBS has the stainless Vaya Travel with the S&S couplers (I assume that's the Traveler) and just loves it. Does yours come with the STI shifters?

I'm in bike love. Great on paved. Had a gravel side adventure as I veered off the path today and she handled well.
