Huh, I just had a pair delivered today since I wore out my Shimano sandals and wanted to try something new. I have just a couple miles on them and need to get the cleats positioned better, but they seem comfy so far.

They were too wide or too narrow and heavier than bricks.

I wear the non-cleat version of the sandals. They run wide, and so do my feet. But they don't last. I've had multiple pairs fail in the same place: the material right in front of the outer ankle gives way. I can keep wearing them that way for a while, but I can't get them as snug on my foot when they start to tear. Too bad because they tick all my other boxes: close toed, non-leather, wide, comfortable on or off bike and on or off road, wet weather friendly.

It's too bad about the SPD sandals because that was the only footwear I saw that I thought might get me to try clipless. Except that I have heard the SPD version doesn't run as wide as the regular one. I guess it's a good thing I'm happy with flat pedals.

I could never wear sandals cycling. My feet sunburn easier than any other part of my body, and I burn easily. I guess you could wear socks but that would seem to defeat the whole purpose of sandals.

I bought a pair last year and use them every summer day for commuting. So comfortable and durable I'm thinking about using them on an upcoming tour. I guess we all have different feet.

i have had some keen commuters. i like that they seem lighter than others i have had (shimano 2-strap, lake, and nashbar,) have a covered toe, and give my feet striped tan lines. i don't like that they are expensive (around $100?) and the stitching fails early. i would guess high price and low quality are why they are being discontinued. this does not make me sad as long as someone is making decent bicycling sandals.

I would guess they're being discontinued because relatively few people wear sandals while bicycling. Roadies wear road shoes, mountain bikers wear mountain biking shoes, and recreational cyclists wear whatever shoes they already own. Not sure who the target market is for SPD sandals...

I'm generally a fan of Keen stuff, probably have 4 pair of various Keen footwear now. But I agree. My last pair of non cleat sandals failed out of the blue for no reason and with reasonable use. The straps just ripped out of the sole one day. Fortunately, I had purchased them from LL Bean, so even though they were well out of Keen warranty time wise, LL Bean refunded me with zero questions asked.

Funny this thread should come up. I just realized that Keen made cleat sandals a few days ago. I've been living in a cave, apparently.

20% off right now at Scheels if you like black.

It always stinks when a product you like is discontinued.

I'm also in the Keens come apart to fast for my taste camp... But all mine have failed at the points where they were glued together. On one pair it happened while doing a backpacking trip. Had to sew them together several times so voided warranty. I was asked if they had been left in a hot car or if I wore them to work when I showed them to the place I bought them at three weeks before. Told the guy yes, left them in a 427 Shelby cobra and wore them to the office once. The guy absolutely didn't get it, just said well, that's probably why.

At any rate, I never tried the spd keens, though I thought about it, just could not bring myself to try a brand I had no previous luck with.

I have been really pleasantly surprised at the Nashbar sandals I bought last year. Bought them hoping they would last for one 1500 mile trip, and have been using them for a lot longer than that. Maybe I got lucky, don't know, but thinking about buying a couple more pair for fear that when they do wear out they wont be made anymore either. last bike trip I did a heck of a hike, with rock scrambling and a spelunking trip, a mile of creek bed route, and a long muddy slope while wearing them. My friends were impressed enough that a couple of them might be ordering them.

I wouldn't care if Shimano made sandals (or anything!) larger than 48.

Yes, my Keen sandals are all that I use while on tour. Having said that , the pair I had ,came apart at the rear strap, but R.E.I. made it good with a replacement pair of Keen's.

I'd guess commuters primarily (thus the name Keen Commuters) and tourers secondarily.

I've been wearing mine in the city all summer, and no sign of any problems. But I do notice I keep having to tighten the straps, even mid way through a ride. But I second the "heavy as bricks" sentiment.

What with those shoes, and the Shimano sandals which I also use occasionally, my feet have very interesting tan lines. (The Shimanos are too narrow for me though. Not comfortable for long rides.)

I have never had a problem with my Keens and have ridden thousands of miles in them including multi-week tours and 1000 km brevets.

This is too bad. I've been wearing a pair of original Keen Commuters for about 4 years now. In the warmer weather I wear them commuting, and can wear them throughout the day at work. Also, they are very comfortable for road riding and less aggressive mountain riding. These do definitely fit differently (narrower) than the rest of Keen's sandal line. I have been very happy with the comfort, fit, and durability. I'll have to consider picking up another pair before they are gone forever.

Got home yesterday from a 892 mile tour. Used the Keen Arroyo sandals and loved them. On previous tours with other cycle shoes, I usually had to change shoes as soon as I got to the campsite but these were still comfortable after a long day with a gazillion pedal strokes.
