Utah out-backs

Looking forward to Utah in September. May end up being a solo pedal, Moab and south. Looking for some ideas for out-and-backs from campgrounds, or a 5-6 day round from Moab. Thanks.

On roads, or on trails?

Planning on taking my son out to Moab for road biking next year (13 yo becoming a man thing). Please follow up with what you find. A good site I've found is (Moab Road Biking) but I'd like to get a first person report.

This site has some maps of 3 area road rides in Moab.

I have ridden the Potash Road. Good flat ride, may have headwind (or tailwind if lucky), spectacular views. If you are hiking down in that area Corona Arch is a good hike.

I've ridden the road into Arches NP. Great views but lots of car traffic on a narrow road and buzzy pavement even on my plush steel road bike.

I've ridden Hwy 313 out to Canyonlands. Nice wide shoulder for the bikes so traffic doesn't matter too much. It's quite a climb out to the end. Fun ride back down.

There is now a nice bike path from Moab along Hwy 191 all the way out to the junction of Hwy 313. It's some climbing to get out of the Moab valley.

I haven't ridden Rt 128 but driven it many times. Lots of car traffic and narrow twisty road. There is now a bike path several miles out along it.

I have ridden to road from LaSal Junction to Paradox. (South of the Moab area.) This is a nice ride. Very rural not much traffic. There is a big climb/descent on the Colorado side. South of LaSal (the town) is the road through Lisbon Valley. A remote area but a really nice ride.

Thanks! I appreciate the info. It'd be great to participate in one of the century events that are hosted in the area but don't think we'd be able to schedule accordingly. I've seen quite a few maps online with various routes but it's difficult not having any situational awareness of the area. Last thing I want to do is put my son (and me!) in a stressful situation.

Moab is not really a road bike hub sort of place, IMO. too dry, too remote and desolate, too much traffic in town and the scenery outside of town is probably boring for a kid. the Grand Junction area might be more suitable. it's kind of in the middle of nowhere, but there is a lot of touristy, amusement park kind of stuff in town these days for young people.

pick up a copy of Edward Abbey's "Desert Solitare" for a taste of what it used to be like, and surf some websites of Myrtle Beach, S.C. for what it's like in town these days.

BTW, i'm heading your way (Arlington) in a couple of weeks, on my motorcyle. then biking from Arlington to Dover, Oh. on a four day tour to visit my cousins and my ancient 90 year old aunt. have fun. i might even be passing through Moab.
