Thin rubber stair tread works well.

For $5.00 you can order a set of the long ones from Planet Bike.

Aluminum fenders are pretty, but I would not use a front fender that does not have a safety quick-disconnect mount. If debris is picked up and gets jammed between the wheel and the tire on the front wheel, it may be a serious problem.

On a tour last week I was riding downhill behind my daughter. There was a loud snapping sound, and I thought she broke a spoke. When she got stopped we looked at the bike and found one of the fender stays (SKS) on her front wheel had popped out of the safety mount, just like it was designed to do.

I'll take function over fashion on a touring bike any day.

I have full fenders on my full suspension mountain bike, hardtail no suspension mountain bike (set up for touring), Huffy cruiser, Miami Sun adult trike (front fender only) and Giant Cypress DX Hybrid.
I plan on adding full fenders to my other bikes. I am not fond of "skunk stripes".

Plastic Stair tread, that semi-rubber base board they use in commercial buildings, leather, bleach jugs, milk jugs, etc.

Aaron:)
