I didn't see any signage last night but I know I should tonight from what I remember from being where I am tonight when I was here last year. Many parks are posted closed after dark. Granted I do things a bit differently. Both of the last two nights I got into town around 7:30PM and didn't have the slightest clue where I was going to camp. I had planned on making it further along the route both days but didn't quite make it. I ended up camping out in areas I didn't have the slightest clue about where any campsites were at. Last night in particular I was finding a lot of potential sites right in the heart of town, churches galore, most on the bottom of the pile of the list though. I finally gave up and wanted to get to McDonalds but I couldn't even remember where McDonalds was at. I thought it was on the east highway through town. I came in from the west and I just started riding east and found nothing. I finally got back into town and head down the north/south highway and past by a park and saw the pavilion and knew I found the site. I still hadn't eaten supper or got any of the work for route planning, checking emails, etc done online yet and it was dark. I headed on down and found McDonalds and grabbed supper and got everything done online, not very quickly, and then headed back out to the campsite just before 1AM. Most nights I don't make it into town until 7-7:30PM. Pretty much I never head to the campsite before 10:30PM. I wait until it is dark out and then I still try to conceal to help further make sure no one is going to see me. If I'm not seen, no one is going to call the cops and I won't be bothered.

In the middle of the Taklamakan desert.

Behind a gas station in Malaysia.

Behind a village in Anhui.

On most places in the world, nobody cares where you camp.

In most places in the world people aren't so consumed by money that they have to make sure they get every penny from you that they can get. Here in the states it's a total different story. For the love of money, is the root of all evil.

Sometimes I've been asleep for 3 hours by then, but I am often on the road hours before sunrise. That probably accounts in part for the differences in our approaches.

Bottom line, we all do what works for us

BTW, I find that the signage about parks being closed after dark seems to be a regional thing. I very rarely have seen them in small towns in Kansas, but on either coast almost all parks have signs to that effect.

Finland.

Wikipedia has an article on Right to Roam, it contains some information regarding camping also.

This is what someone posted on Facebook in Warmshowers group.

"We're cycling along the coast south to Spain now & it's too crowded, 'no camping' signs everywhere so difficult for 'stealth'! Camping is very expensive and no Warmshowers hosts available (we've been trying for 3 weeks) - it's summer holidays! Go where your friends are - I'd recommend."

I have talked with tourists that have done the Baja California route, and they were able to legally free camp on the beaches and in the desert regions. Water was an issue in primitive camps down there, but developed campgrounds with amenities are much cheaper than in the USA.

It's not always a matter of where you setup, but rather how you setup. Like Cyclebum talks about TX camping, if you don't setup your tent they won't say anything...you aren't camping, once you set the tent up your nailed, your camping.
Picnic tables in highway rest stops are known as the "Iron Butt Motel" to long distance motorcycle riders.
