BE SAFE - Chilean tourist killed by pickup in Thailand after 5 yrs on the road

This sad story made it to Google News headlines for about 2 minutes today. Chilean bicycle tourist 5 years into a Guinness record attempt killed by pickup truck, on a straight section of road:

Chilean's round-the-world record cycling quest ends in death on Thai highway | World news | The Guardian

Mr Guillermo apparently averaged >17,000 miles per year for the five years, and married and had a son on the trip. I don't know how he found the time and energy for that last bit since he reported ~800 flat tires on the trip.

Bikes: Surly LHTD with a YAK trailer. I may have to ditch the trailer and go to panniers but I'll give it a try and see what happens.

This can happen anytime and anywhere. There's risk in bicycle touring. We either have to be willing to take the risk or give it up.
