Olympics 2016
The Olympic track cycling events due to start in less than 5 months in Rio. (I could not find another thread on this topic hence this one.)
Here is the latest I could find in the new velodrome status:

Speaking from someone who rode in the last PanAm test event, which was put on days after the track was ready, it ruins the track. There is so much concrete dust in the air that gets pounded into the new wood that it probably takes years off the live of the wood. Our track looked 5 years old after 5 weeks. Not to mention the air quality, although that dust takes months to settle out of the air.
Of course the factility wont actually be ready too. They may be ready to run a test event but the building wont be ready. We were not nearly as behind and still had no hot water and none of the offices were complete, wires hanging everywhere, etc. Its a shame everything is always such a damn last minute rush.
Anyway I have no doubt they will be ready for olympics, but the test event will be rushed. Kind of cool they put it next to what Im guessing the pool and gyms. Should be a cool place after the games.

(1) Here is the latest news that I can find on the status of the Rio Olympic velodrome (from USA Today (13 May))
The velodrome, which will host track cycling, has not been completed and a test event had to be canceled, but organizers have issued assurances that it would be done before opening ceremonies on Aug. 5.
Source: With impeachment trial set, what we know about Rio Olympics
(2) Any news on what the USA Olympic cycling kit will look like?
I hope they do not look like these https://olympics.si.com/olympics/2016...-nike-team-usa

The Dutch team is doing some altitude training at BVV this week - the track calendar notes that spectators are welcome, if you're in the area.
For some reason, I'm not allowed to post an attachment, so imagine a picture here of a plethora of Kogas hanging in the bunker....

The IOC must be considering other options by now. I wonder what those options are and if they are reaching out to those venues.
To be honest, I can totally see the events being distributed across other countries. It'd be a logistical nightmare...but it's possible. They should start planning now.
For example: When the Olympics were held in Atlanta, it's my understanding that all of the Soccer/Futbol events were not held in the same stadium. They were spread around to various stadiums in the area that were miles apart. Do that...just on an international level.
I think it would be a mess to drop an entire Olympics on an unsuspecting country (like London). I'm sure London would say that they'd love to host the entire games again. It's still a huge undertaking. Maybe it's easier to distribute the games to various world-class facilities in various countries.
This totally screws fans who already bought travel tickets. But, that stuff can probably be renegotiated with airlines. Plus, 99.999% of the spectators won't be in person at the events anyway.

They'll plop the Red Bull Minidrome in an abandoned warehouse somewhere on the outskirts of Vila Cruzeiro.

For those who don't know, the velodrome in Atlanta (Dick Lane Velodrome) isn't the one used for the Olympics. DLV was built 20 years before the Olympics in East Point, GA (ATL suburbs). The Olympic velodrome was built in Stone Mountain Park and disassembled after the Olympics.

Well the 96 atlanta velodrome is now on it's 20th year of existence. Not too bad for a temporary velodrome.

Some great pictures of the Dutch sprint team here:

Note the interesting chain tensioners/axle retainers on some bikes.

I hope the events can run as scheduled for many reasons. Track cycling is my favorite event of the olympics even though I rowed 5 years and coached rowing for 10 (some of my crew members raced track cycling). We don't get to see bike track racing enough in NA and wish we had places like I've seen in Germany where a night at the velodrome was party time.

I heard from a reputable source that the actual track is complete but items such as seats and restrooms are behind schedule.

One thing to note that folks who train/race on indoor wooden tracks will know is that dust can be an issue.
With all new facilities, there's always lots of dust from construction and installation activities. And dust from things "settling".
For those who don't know, many indoor wooden tracks have a surface similar to that of a nice basketball court where dust can make it as slippery as ice.
I hope they get all of that settled before the events start. I really hope they get to run some test events to work out the kinks with the electronics, logistics, cubicles in the infield, press boxes, etc... Recall that the London Olympic Velodrome hosted a World Cup as one of their test events.

I assume this is the kit that cyclists will wear to stand on the podium. I'm not very impressed.
I hope the racing kit is better looking.

You jest...but what if they do do something like that where they build a temporary structure. Recall that the velodrome for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics was an outdoor temporary velodrome.

Off topic, but there were a lot of Michigan connections to that Olympic velodrome. The builder, several officials, one of the on site announcers (a poster here on BF). And part of the venue security (the velodrome and as I remember the archery complex were together?) was a MI National Guard unit.

Here is the NBC broadcast/streaming schedule for Olympic events. It looks like track cycling will be streamed at first glance.

Not a 2016 story but could be important for 2020:
News: Gold for GB at Junior Euros
The Great Britain quartet of Ethan Hayter, Matthew Walls, Reece Wood and Fred Wright broke the British junior record for the Team Pursuit, held by Owain Doull, Simon Yates, Dan McLay and Sam Harrison to take the Junior Men’s European title on Tuesday.
Fastest in qualifying on the Italy track at Montichiari, Hayter, Walls, Wood and Wright raced the final flat out to record a stunning time of 4:04.142

Glad to see the track is 'ready', although Im sure we will hear more about it once thousands of people stuff in there in a couple of weeks.
Regarding the RUS team, I hope they ban the entire country to make a point. Every time I hear about another person caught, in any sport, I care a little less about any sports. Ban for life, ban for entire teams and countries, this all has to stop. Make it so horrible to get caught doping and less people will do it.
Imagine if the TdF had a rule that if 1 rider is caught, the entire team is kicked out for 5 years. You think people would have protected lance like they did? They would have crucified him day 1 and we wouldn't even know his name.

What sucks is that the more experience you get, the more you realize (or accept) that cheating has been around since the dawn of sport.
It could be argued that it's in our nature. Kids learn that cheating (and lying) work at a very early age.
I agree that the punishments should be more severe and that team punishments could work, too. The pressure of harming the careers of friends might be enough to dissuade a person who is on the fence about do it.
Lifetime or very long term bans will definitely work. Even amateurs devote a lot of time, money, and energy and the risk of it all going down the drain is a good deterrent.
