Tiny, no I mean REALLY tiny drop bars?
 

What are the smallest drop bars in terms of width/drop/reach on the market? I'm thinking to get a set to swap in on my son's BMX bike for when he rides the track (he's 6), and they need to be exceptionally tiny. Like 35cm would be huge. Ideas?

What about drop bar-ends on a cut down flat bar? Like the old Scott Aero Rakes.

HUP makes (made?) 32cm drop bars. That's the narrowest I've ever seen for sale. Past that, I think the options are either getting some made / welded, or getting a narrow flat bar and clamping drops (I think origin8 makes some) to that section. At 6, he shouldn't be putting enough torque on them to pry them loose. (*edit ^ exactly what Taras posted)

I have a Fuji Ace 24 with about 36cm bars, but I tried hunting for similar bars earlier, and they are hard to source.

I suppose one option would be to start sourcing bikes that you could rebuild over time.

So, hunt for a good 24" or 650c bike now, and move the bars over to the smaller bike... then move the bars back as the kid grows.

Just an idea, but a BMX seems like a good candidate for a track conversion as it already has a high BB, tiny cranks (huge variety of lengths available), and 120 spacing for a fixed hub. Easy swap with a second wheel and bar set.

Thanks Taras. This might be the thing. I'm thinking like 25cm width or so.

Plus side is, flat bars are cheap, so you can "expand" as your child grows.

Nittos come in 34-35cm widths.

As a fellow parent of a young track rider, I would steer away from the end add ons. I've seen way too many simple crashes happen due to youth to say all those sharper edges would be safe. You wouldn't get onto our track with them on. I've seen a whole lot of juniors grow up over the years and none were terribly troubled by standard width bars and none seemed to be disadvantaged by them either. Kids are wildly adaptable

We have a bunch of tiny Frog bikes for kids at the Lexus Velodrome - looks like they come with 32cm bars, maybe you can figure out where they source them...

I did see some small Bontrager compact bars at the local co-op recently. I didn't measure the width, but probably in the mid to upper 30's, but very little depth. Full 31.8 clamp area.

Of course, hopefully the OP came up with a solution months ago.

One thought, however, some people tend to think that wider bars give more stability, to a point. It might mean that young kids can do fine with a bit wider bars, then slowly grow in to them.

Specialized Women's Compact is pretty small.
