Can someone point me to a good place to buy track cycling shoes (or, shoes that will fit nicely in my strappy pedals)? I tried Googling several things but wasn't having much luck. I like the Duegi ones with wood soles, but I'm not really in the mood to spend $300 ...

Seconded. What are some quality shoes, or things to look for in shoes, that work well with clips and straps. I have been riding fixed in the streets with crappy old Vans which don't get the job done (heavy shoe, flat rubber bottom, I am digging through the toe, etc).

Smooth and solid? Bumpy 'n flexy? Ribbed for her pleasure?

any hard soled cycling shoe you can put a slotted cleat on should work. I think there was a thread last week about where to get slotted cleats.

flexy=bad
smooth with cleat=good
some sort of rubber sole with a deep groove that fits on the pedal ridge= decent with mtb pedals
Most sneakers = useless on road pedals barely tolerable with sharp mtb pedals.

Or just go clipless.

The ideal is a shoe with laces... Carnac does... isnt in production anymore but if u r lucky u would be able to find them.. carnac piste, those have shoelaces and straps over the top. I got a pair of adidas adistar Road comp, those ones have shoelaces and a zipper over the top, carbon fiber sole, super stiff shoe, im amazed. U can find those like for 97 bucks or so in performance

Duegi with laces and wood sole arent in productions in centuries, where did u find a pair, that shoe is awesome.

But now if u need the shoes to walk aswell the situation changes because theo nes i told u r so stiff that u wont be able to walk, well u can but u should do it. If thats the case try to get a cycloturism shoe, diadora usually have them but i cant remember the model name, are like cycling shoes but no cleats, the sole is a hard material but u can walk as with any shoe with them...

Ive seen a few people useing the last years model adidas that had laces and a zip up cover. I tried to get me a pair. Not happening! haha

Outside of that look at tri shoes. They use a nice smooth cover with 1 strap that uaualy wont get in the way. Lake makes a wicked one.

Those adidas arent a tri shoe at all... not even similar, the starting point is that the shoe has laces, Triatletes have no time to deal with laces at all, second at least in track u have to be super sure the shoe is well fitted, the best way to do that are shoe laces, 3rd the shoe is too stiff for a tria. Besides Tri uses those shimanos with the strap fittend at the opposite side, stuff i cant understand, wonder is some tri got trapped his hand in the chainring or fall trying to adjust the straps... well I think that makes then different but I still trying to figure it out why having the straps mounted at the opposite side of the shoe will give u more comfort.. well is shimano... what else do u xpect? heheh

Not sure that laces are critical to a good track shoe. The top sprinters in the world tend to favor DMT Ultimax's. I use them with clips and straps and have no problems.

Those Carnac Pistes were interesting, but many folks found that the length of the laced portion was relatively short, so it didn't give you a way to adjust the ball area of your foot. Plus, the fit was a bit odd. And they were quite heavy.

It isn't cheap but if you're into Duegi's anyway, check out Rocket 7 and some of the other semi-custom shoes. You can get them with whatever sole you want.

Finally, if the idea is to mount traditional slotted cleats (Anquetils and the like), why use nails? I used to use button-head 4 mm allen bolts with nylock nuts countersunk into the insole. Four bolts per cleat and they'll work fine. Just drill right through the carbon with a regular wood drill.

Overall, though, isn't this going about it the hard way? If you go to World Cup track events you'll only see road pedals, SPD-R's, and PD-7400's, all on modern design shoes with carbon soles.

why would they be? I have't had lace up shoes for well over a decade but I remember that when I switched to three strap/ratchet and strap they felt alot more secure then my older lace up shoes. Also it seems like the catastrophe that might occur if an errant lace escaped the velcro in the middle of a mass start track race would far outweigh any benefit that might be gained.

I haven't used any newer laceup shoes however and am very unexperienced on the track.

I like the idea of Tri shoes -

The way they are designed, they have that beefy strap at the back and are very smooth in the front. There are also quite a few nice models out there. Sidi, Shimano, Carnac and others have very nice shoes in tri versions. Plus, they are mostly CF soled now and super stiff.

Anyone have pics of how a tri shoe fits with a track pedal with toeclips?
