Fixed/Single-Speed or Gears for Road Training?

Right now I have a GT road bike converted to fixed/single, and its fun to ride. But I've mostly kept on the flats, riding uphill (did it once) was painful. The bike is ready for gears and whatnot, since it was a road bike to begin with. I could use my single-chainring crank (Sugino RD) with a road chainring and I don't think that would be a problem (I don't want a "double" up front). I use the campy ripoff brake levers by Tektro, and I wish to take the right one off, replace it with a Veloce brifter and slap on a derailleur and a new rear wheel.

Anyway...

I am wondering if its better to train with gears since I can experiment (I'm new) with gearings and how long I can sustain riding them, etc. I'm running 48/18 right now, and it works well enough, but it's definately not a gearing I try to skid with. Am I just better off staying fixed?

Why are you posting this under "track"? Gears won't help you much for track training. Stay fixed...

Not to mention if the hills are painful, do them anyway and get stronger.

My cycling improved 10 fold when I started doing about 90% of my training on a fixed gear.
