Hour record attempt at the Kissena Velodrome

Next weekend I will be attempting to break the USAC hour record. If you are in NYC that sunday you should stop by the track. The attempt is going to start between 2 and 3pm (depending on the wind) but I hope to get the BBQ started a little bit earlier (maybe around 1pm).

Not to be an ass but can you really call something a record attempt if you have little to no chance of breaking the record?

Come on, lighten up a little - and hey, I'll hold the record for the Kissena velodrome when I'm done.

But really this is meant to be fun, a chance for my friends to hang out and BBQ and a chance for me to suffer.

Edit: I do appreciate you giving me "little to no chance" instead of "no chance" to break the record however.

you never know maybe a tornado will settle over the track and you'll have a 50mph tailwind the whole time.

I can only hope. And NY did recently have two tornados touch down! First time in 100 years.

Good luck with the attempt! I've been following the blog and its nice to see that everything is getting wrapped up. Wish I could make it to cheer but my schedule doesn't allow me to hop the Chinatown express that day.

Make sure you post your results here. Will be the "official" BF hour record. Something for the rest of us to shoot at this winter

39.2km. I wanted to break 40 but I got close enough. Just two more laps...

Slightly more information (and pictures) on my blog: https://hourrecord.blogspot.com/

Eddy Merckx claimed riding an hour record took 3 years from his life.

Good job!

I've always thought that was rather difficult to verify while he's still alive....

You'd think so. But the strange thing was, it didn't take the years off the end of his life; it took them off the beginning. He'd always been born in 1942, till he rode the hour record...then suddenly, bam! He'd been born in 1945.

Weirdest thing ever...

Is an hour record an actual goal of yours? Are you going to devote most of your cycling to training for it?

It is but I'm fairly realistic about it. I'm not going to break it, I'm probably never even going to come close. At the moment my training is going to be for track racing, not the hour. I'm sure I'll dedicate some time next year to hour-specific training if I do decide to try again.

What I would really like to see is some local interest in things like the hour record. I hope someone around here decides to break my record (which honestly shouldn't be too hard) and we can get some friendly competition going.

And on a completely unrelated note I recently received word that there is an Australian currently training for a shot at the women's master hour record: https://onehourrecordattempt.blogspot.com/

Yoshi,

Congrats on a tough effort! How did you end up Gearing? Looks like it could be a "fun" ride.

What gear ratio were you using?

Does anyone know, I have a friend who is actually trying to do this, he's got his pursuit bike and everything, but he's a little confused at what gear ratio to start his training. The last hour record was set using a 55x13 yeah? Something like 116 gear inches. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

well 39 kms in one hour is quite impressive. It is quite hard to ride in a track. many people think that is just go and ride just like nothing but even in indoor tracks u have a lot of wind all the time in front of u.

55x13? wow man... I can barely move descently 50x15, I cant even imagine how hard is 55x13... well in the road probably but in a track? wow again...!!!

wonder if lance will do it someday. Probably he wont do it ever... Wonder if Alexander Vinokourov could do it hehe He didnt win the TDF... record of the hour is the next step to be part of history

I kept my gearing fairly low for my attempt: 48x15 with a 700x20 tire. I would have liked to have experimented with gearing a little bit more but I just didn't have the time so I stuck with what I was used to.
