Going to the track for the first time

A guy I work with told me that the local velodrome can be ridden on when there aren't any other events on it. Should I go out there on my road bike to get a slight feel for the track before taking one of the introductory to track riding classes and riding a fixed gear bike?

Sure, why not? The track was a lot longer than I thought when I got to try it out!
