First kilo race - 1.16 min

Hi everyone!

Should be a short introduction of myself in here and a report of my first kilo race ever.

On past saturday I drove my first kilo on a regional championchip in Heidenau/Germany.

Track: Outdoor, 250 meters.

Bike: Planet X, classic track style (all timetrial-parts were forbidden to guarantee equal chances)

Gear: 50 x 14

Time: 1.16 min

I was loosing appr. 2 seconds because I could not hold the inner line completely.

Now You guys can crush me..........

I don't think that's bad at all. Pretty fast, no?

How did you find the gear? Heavy? Okay? Do you know what other riders use in the Kilo on that track?

I'm curious because I've never done a Kilo. The record at the track where I race (very rough, with only 14 degree banking, 318 meters) is 1:13.9.

I know that the faster guys do a 12.x second 200m, and I struggled to get 13.6, so I'll be slower in the Kilo by a lot.

For the 3k pursuit, the faster guys were in the 3:50s (some with, some without aero bars). I did a 4:41 No aerobars but a TriSpoke/HED3 front wheel. Didn't make a difference, I wanted to stop after about 1.5 km. Based on that I figure I'd be hard pressed to do a 1:17 or 1:18 kilo.

Do you plan on returning to the track to try and better your time?

Yeah, the gear (50x14) is pretty heavy.
I've never done the track before and so a have to develope my skills on high cadences. Now I can race up to 120 rpm in a good and technical style. So I was looking for a gear that gives me a speed between 52and 57 kph at cadences between 110 and 120. And thats the 50 X 14 gear.
Anyway - it is not the optimum. The gear is to heavy for an explosive start and a fast first lap.
The elite guys doing cadences round 140 rpm in kilo. Should be meaning a 50 x 15 or at least 50 x 16 for me in the future.

But You know - at first I have to ramp up my cadences. The power and strength are not the problem, I come originally from powerlifting. I have to find a way to bring the power trough the bike on the track.

My plans for the future are now focussed only in track racing and especiallly the kilo. I will get a special programm over the winter for it from a professional trainer. We will se......
