Deep Vs?
 

Being a newbie to track/fixed gear, I wanted to know if Deep Vs are actually track wheels that fixed-gear riders use because its trendy.

Like, do track bicyclist actually use Velocity Deep Vs on the track, or is it just something that has been made popular by fixed-gear culture?

Im am not a track bicyclist (yet =p) and I ride my fixed gear on the street.

I had a set of Deep V's once. They were built well and never went out of true but I think they looked pretty ugly and weren't on the light side of things.

I think Open Pros looks better, if you care about that, and aren't quite as cliche. That being said I think most racers are into lo-pro wheels or carbon. Street kids like Deep V's.

a built deep v with a nice hub and high end clincher has been a good choice for a budget race wheelset (think mavic ellipse for an off the peg example) if you already have that set up in hand. they provide negligible if any aero advantage. as for your question, i wouldn't build a set of deep Vs specifically as a raceday wheel.

as for their burliness for the street, they can look nice and they're durable.

i would argue that H+son's make a better wheel for track use compared to the deep v. the H+son weighs the same, but is more aero and costs about the same. I have been using one on the front of my road bike and have been impressed with what you get for the price.

The H+son can be found on Ebay for a bit over $300 laced to Soma hubs. Is that what you have or do you know anything about those hubs? Any good? Complete Velocity wheelsets are usually built with Formula hubs it seems.

If you want budget track wheels, ignore psuedo-aero rims and get some cheap tubulars laced to quality hubs. Save the deep section wheels for when you're buying carbon.

I got a pair and their pretty nice. I missed out on the discounted 85s, but I've been riding on the 50s a few times now and am pretty happy with them.

I trained and raced on Deep-Vs all last season. They served me well. I've got Velocity Pro Elites (the tubular version of the Deep V) for training this season. Sold the clinchers I used from last season to another guy at the track. So, yeah, they are fine for track.

I always liked the stiffness of the Deep Vs, sure they aren't as light as an Open Pro but I've owned both and prefer Deep V.
