Yeah, I agree. Most trainers will work. But, it's always best to try before you buy. Take your rear wheel to the store with you, or when you meet someone to buy locally.

I know that Kurt Kinetic, Tacx, and Cyclops work with 15mm bolts. And, as Scrod said, if your axle pokes out past your 15mm axle nut, you'll have to put on another axle nut to cover the excess before you mount the wheel into the trainer. I've had to do this before.

My Kurt Kinetic from about 5 years ago specifically warned not to use it with 15mm nuts. I did it anyway, and it seemed stable. It worked for a while, but one day, the wheel popped out and I bent the rim when it got tangled in the trainer. Maybe they've changed the design.

Dear Carleton,
Sorry if this has been asked before, but is there anything that you eat or do after a long workout to recover strength?
thanks

That's a complicated answer. Take a stroll through the Training and Nutrition forum for some good information.

Beer + Cheeseburger = works for me every time.

evilcryalotmore 10-16-11 06:22 PM

Dear carleton, What tire size do you use for track riding?

redpear 10-16-11 06:29 PM

I heard somewhere he uses a 19c up front and a 22c back.

+1

That the race wheelset. I only use 19c up front because that's what the manufacturer recommends and the wheel actually performs better with a tire that size. I normally wouldn't use such a thin tire and I don't recommend it...unless that's what the wheel is designed to use.

My tubular training wheels are 22c front and rear. My Mavic Ellipse clincher training/race wheels have 23c front and rear.

Dear Carleton,

Kilo TT.

What do you think of them? Are they viable track bikes? The holy grail of the $3-500 price range?

calv 10-17-11 10:47 PM

^Lately he's been saying do not buy them. As he finds his friend's Kilo TT VERY heavy. Not track worthy, but better than not being on the track at all.

I'll put some input too. Usually if you don' already have a track frame, Carleton suggests that you get a more mid range bike that you can grow into such as a TK3/2 or Fuji Track Pro or Motobecane Track. The Kilo will work if you have one and you're not sure if you're going to get into racing or not, but if you're wanting to buy a track bike to race track, you might as well jump up to a mid level.

EDIT: Meant to put Motobecane Team Track, not the lower end one :)

You guys really do read what I write. Nice.

If you already have a Kilo TT, race the heck out of it. But, don't buy one to race.

Dear Carleton,

Have you tried the RB-002 handlebars? If so, do you have an opinion on them?

Regards,

jpsawyer 10-23-11 09:27 PM

Dear Carleton,
It has started to get colder where I am, it gets down around 40 or below at night sometimes, and thats when i do a lot of my riding, but now that it has gotten colder I have noticed that I am getting short of breath on my longer rides. This never happened when it was warmer out, and i dont remember it happening last winter/fall either. Do you think this is just due to not keeping my core warm enough or is it just my body not used to the cold air yet? i figured you were the most experienced and smartest biker i know, so i thought i would ask for tips or anything on why this is happening. thanks

Regards,

I've never used them. But, it depends on if you like the feel. I wouldn't race them because they are not heat treated for extra strength.

I have steel Nitto RB021 for use on the track.

I have asthma and the cold air affects me, too. I use a balaclava when it's 40-50 degrees F (4-10C). I don't ride when it's colder than that. I get whiny. I bought an indoor trainer for really days. But, other people love riding in cold weather.

I rolled up on some Baltimore cops while wearing this with no bike helmet one morning on the way to work. Scared the bajeezus out of them.

so badass, Carleton.

sooo good.
and thanks, i have mild asthma as well, its normally never a problem when i ride, but i guess this would do it. maybe i will invest in getting a ninja mask as well. i dont think i will be scaring any cops though.haha

Dear Carleton,

I'm thinking of picking up a used road bike to go on longer rides. The one i'm looking at has the same top tube length (54cm C-C) but different seat tube lengths (my bike:53 C-T vs other bike 53cm C-C). Should I be ok with this? I was thinking they would probably equal out in size considering the BB drop on my bike is 54mm and the road bike is 70mm. Any thoughts?
