Thanks, would you recommend a splined or bolt on style hub? or is that overkill?

That isn't a very good way to torque the cog if you're going to skid and all that. Use a chain whip and even a small cheater bar if you dare to

That's one solution. But, the splines may develop some play in them.

Just get a nice, race-spec hub like Dura Ace with a Dura Ace lockring (a new DA hub will come with one).

What is the current preferred DA track hub? 7710? Has there been much innovation between the series?

Carleton, what is your speed on the track if you are producing 2000 watts?

The 7700 is a needle bearing which is smoother, but requires maintenance. The 7710 (NJS) is sealed and is still very smooth and maintenance free. NJS because they race in rain which isn't recommended for the needle bearing. It would require cleaning and repacking after getting wet.

As far a clinchers go, the same mid to high end tires you see on road bikes work fine on the track. I say stick to the higher end of the spectrum. They are grippy.

Please clarify your question. Do you mean, what is my speed when one is at 2,000W or what max speed comes as a result of 2000W? Or something else?

Max wattage usually comes during a standing start effort and actually around 125M (give or take) into a standing start effort. But the max speed comes several seconds later as a result of the acceleration. Also, the Flying 200M produces the highest max speeds, but not as much wattage as the standing effort. This is because the standing effort has the benefit of requiring more torque. Power is a function of Cadence and Torque. You can get more power by increasing torque (how hard you press on the pedal), cadence (how fast you move the pedal), or both.

I realized it was a dumb question as I was taking a shower just now and came back hoping to delete it before you got to it. For someone whose job title is "scientist" I can't remember my high school mechanical physics very well. Thanks.

Max solo speed (meaning without following someone's slipstream) is a little over 40MPH. There are lots of guys faster than me.

Dear Carleton,

I want to put dummy hoods on my Nitto Noodles, and I assume I have to remove my Lizardskins to do it.

Am I almost 100% going to have to buy a new set of Lizardskins? :/

Those guys have the benefits of gears.

I can reach just under 40MPH from a standing start in about 250M...in less than 20"

Hopefully next year I can beat that.

It depends on how old they are. Probably not though. Just be careful when unwrapping.

I've rewrapped mine before.

Cool! Do you think I HAVE to wrap them in a figure 8 like people tell you to? I don't have enough tape to do that either, man!

Carleton,

Would you consider, say, a Leader 725 a good starting frameset for track racing?

^I remember seeing the leader 725/735 on a list of beginner track bikes in the track racing section.. So I would assume so because I don't remember carleton pointing them out specifically. Also, TejanoTrackie loved his Leader 721 and said he would take it out on the velodrome I believe a while ago. Could be wrong about that though.

edit/ oh yeah,

/notcarleton

edit2/ this is the list

Dear Carleton,

I originally posted about cramping in my calves, and I wanted to say thanks. I grabbed a couple electrolyte gels from my LBS and haven't had a problem with cramping since. Seems like I may just have to change my diet so I don't get out of control with these things (they are actually really tasty and I feel like I could eat them like candy haha). But now I have a second problem. I'm currently riding with DZR Clipless shoes, and some Crankbrother Candy 1 pedals and I've unclipped twice when slowing down from high speed. I wasn't skidding just "skip-checking" as I call it, so I don't twist my foot. Am I maybe exerting too much force on the pedals that they just unclip or is there another problem. The shoes, cleats, and pedals are all just about 6 months old so they aren't too worn down. Thanks in advance.

I think so but can't say for certain till I see the geometry chart...which Leader doesn't publish

I'm glad I could help! I wish I had taken my own advice yesterday. I cramped pretty hard.

6 months of daily use could wear the cleat down. Not sure without having a look at both sides of your cleat though.
