Not finding my answers online, so its time for dumb questions I don't want to ask my shop.

I currently ride, and have been for a years....on 3/32 and a 110 crank. I know... But literally have 1000s of track miles on it and its been good to me (other than some chain stretch).

Going to a proper track crank/cogs/chain now. Track is not very popular around me so I'm stuck buying online, but since I am in the US for the next month (from Canada) its a perfect time to buy and avoid duty/shipping to canaduh.

I have a cervelo T1, looks like 68mm BB.

Looking at a dura-ace crank, I don't understand the octalink or BB options. What exactly do I need here? Will the BB-7700 simply fit and take the crank?

Should I like at something other than Dura-ace? Im easily persuaded


Finally, can someone recommend an online dealer in the US they like? Im in Arizona if it matters until April.

Shimano makes many of their products in entry, medium, and high-end flavors. The same goes for their BBs that will work with their track crank. What you need is any Octalink V1 109.5mm spindle. I've seen them in Dura Ace sealed (BB7710), Dura Ace needle bearing BB7700) (these require periodic servicing), as well as Ultegra and heavier 105 variants.

The Dura Ace ones will be close to 100USD. The 105 around 25USD.

The 7710 is probably the most popular. That's what I use. But 105 works just as well. It's just a small bit heavier.

Awesome, thanks! I think I get it now, it was the BB terms that was throwing me but I see now.


Another question, can you recommend a chain? Im more of an endurance rider than sprinter so wondering if its worth getting a lighter chain? I have KMC chains on my road bikes and like it a lot.

The KMC K710/K710SL is beefy but overkill for most. My other favorite is the Izumi ECO (around 30USD). It's lighter than the K710/K710SL and good for sprinting or endurance. It's not as quiet as the K710. Comes with a spring clip master link that works fine.

On a related note, the high-end Izumi V Supertoughness is also not as quiet as the K710/K710SL.

There are many others out there that will work well. I'd steer away from any chain under $10. Those seem to stretch and that will eat up your more expensive chainrings and cogs.

Go for 1/8" over 3/32". 3/32" equipment is strong enough for most, but it is far less common. So you are better off getting 1/8". Lots more options in the new and used markets.

Yup 1/8th is the plan (especially going to 144bcd). When I bought my frame the 3/32 was a 'quick build' that never got resolved, I just collected more 3/32 gears.

I just looked at Scrod's prices and he's selling the K710 (and other good chains) for under $20. Doh! I've paid $27 for that chain in the past. I've paid $30 for the ECO. That's how good his prices are. (Sorry to sound like a shill)

Your 3/32" ("narrow") cogs will work with your new 1/8" ("wide") chainrings and chain.

I just had my 7710 bottom bracket and Dura Ace crank installed. Love it! Izumi Model V chain is on and I'm ready to go. And yes, the Izumi is a bit loud but who cares. haha!!! Got the crank and bb from Ben's. Shipped quick and the the prices were great!
