biking to run?

I'm 55 and I want to work may way back up to at least a mediocre 1.5 mile run time.

Due to issues with my feet I can't train on them more than 1 or 2 times per week.

Could a mostly biking program significantly improve my running?

I'll share very limited experience. I haven't run in about 4 years, and have been cycling exclusively the past year and a half. On Saturday I went out for a run, and did a pretty tough two miles at at a 7:12 pace, which if it's a 5k pace I think is pretty good, though not great. That said, I really have no desire to take up running, even if I could be pretty good at it (assuming I could make further improvements on my time with additional training). I guess the big question is do you like running so much that you want to continue doing and working around your foot limitations, or could you potentially replace running entirely with cycling?

Biking should help with general leg fitness and cardiovascular fitness which should help with running some, but not 100%. I would expect that a fit cyclist could move to running much quicker than someone who doesn't exercise at all.

In Portland, I used to bike 5 to 10 miles or so to Forest Park, then run for 5 to 10 miles or more, then ride my bike back home, but that has been a few years ago.

No, I definitely don't love running.
I'm just a bit worried that not being able to run a mile kind of means not being in shape to live.

Currently doing a 1.75 mile hard walk/run test one day and a long walk another day.
5 days of bike or air-dyne

You didn't mention intervals. The air-dyne is a great tool for those workouts. They suck, and I don't know anyone who loves them, but they offer lot of bang for the buck.

my 2 cents, if you can't run more than you are, then any exercise will help your fitness improve, of course.

every sport helps every other sport, to some degree. when I hurt my Achilles running, cycling was a proper exercise to recover. I found swimming to help my cycling. but then, swimming helps everything. I gave up running outside for an indoor treamill and I believe it has vastly improved my technique. I've read that cycling is the best training for cycling and I assume the same applies to all sports. swim to swim better, etc.

I found that they use different muscles in the legs -- when I first tried running after several years of cycling, I was sore, real sore, for a week.

You don't say why you want to run. If it is just for the exercise and your feet are a limiting factor, then perhaps an elliptical could provide the same effect -- but you would, of course need a gym.

For myself, I have had a hip injury that has stopped me from running -- but I can use an elliptical because it is low impact. Well, actually, it NO impact! There are different types of ellipticals: I use one with a walking/running kind of stride but it also works the arms with a pumping motion as well. I like it because, being completely manual (there's no motor in it), I have complete control and also find that it works me harder than either cycling or running. Actually, I use it for my HIIT training...

I have some cycling experience and a ton of (very dated) running experience.

Some years ago I was coming off a number of months with some solid pedaling hours. I had not run in months or likely years and I just went out for a five miler. I have no idea what pace I was running, but there is no way that I would have done those 5 miles in ANY form without the cycling.

So it can be helpful, but it isn't a 1 for 1 replacement.
