John,
That great to hear that getting close to your goal. Good job on the 1.5 lbs. while on vacation! Way to go man!

John M 09-01-04 11:09 AM

Thanks Wonker! Make me feel good that after all these years of trying 1/2 heartly I am on track with sticking to exercise and eating right. :)

Grasschopper 09-01-04 11:31 AM

I thread in the Road Cycling forum got me thinking that I may be working against myself. After my runs and longer rides I drink an Endurox R4 which has the 4:1 carb/protien ratio and about 270 cal per serving to help muscle recovery and stop muscle damage...but is it slowing my fat burning? Should I kill the R4 and just drink water (FWIW I drink at least 64 oz of water per day as well)? Thoughts?

kitquinc 09-02-04 03:39 AM

that supermodel comment made me chuckle... keep up the good work

Lufty 09-02-04 04:59 AM

Hi all...new to this thread! Trying to loose a few before training for a TNT Century in Spring...anyhow:

Question: Does anyone know of a good calculation for body weight-to-distance/avarage MPH to calorie burning for cycling?
There seem to be alot of calculators out there for the 150Lb person, of which I am not(yet!)

Thanks

John M 09-02-04 06:45 AM

Grasschopper: I just ride to lose weight. I only drink water, does not speed up recovery, but I am not focusing on racing right now just losing weight. I never did drink sports drinks after the fact, even when I was thinner. But someone in my build, ie heavy, does not need the extra calories. JMO

Lufty, not I but I am sure someone here does.

Grasschopper 09-02-04 08:08 AM

John M - Thanks for the comment. I think I will go a week or so without the drinks (Also use Accelerade or Gatorade on rides) and see what happens.

Zin 09-02-04 09:17 AM

Hey Grasschopper, I would recommend at least drinking Propel sports water on your rides of any length over ~20 miles. It is important to keep your electrolytes balanced. Only drinking water over longer distances will tend to knock them out of balance. Also it will help your body to make the most of your water to hydrate better.

My two cents on this one is that water is the best way to go. I've always had a weight problem (and probably always will) and one of my big weaknesses was that I was drinking all my calories. So, what I did was switch to calorie-free drinks (mostly Crystal Light as I'm not much of a pop drinker). Anyways, I figured that getting rid of that useless sugar would do my body good, but there was no significant difference. After a year of this, I read an article about how the human body can build resistances to sugar substitute products and this will prevent weight loss. Anyways, I switched to water and within the next two months dropped 15 lbs. I didn't increase my physical routine and my diet remained the same.

Hey Wonkerjaw, it that you in your avatar?

WonkerJaw 09-03-04 07:36 AM

Yeah that's me... The day this picture was taken I had just finished a 60 mile ride through the hill country. Talk about guilt free Bar-B-Que!

Zin 09-03-04 08:25 AM

Cool! So, was this ride through the "hill country" any where Llano? Or perhaps Killeen?
I was born in Killeen and my family tree goes back to Llano for several generations.

WonkerJaw 09-03-04 11:17 AM

Oh Yeah, I remember you saying that you had family down my way. We were 50 miles southwest of Killeen in Burnet. Llano is less than 30 miles to Burnet. If you ever come down for trip maybe we can go ride. Lots of great place to ride around here.

Zin 09-03-04 11:26 AM

Hey you bet! Actually, I should be in the "Hill Country" next July for the family reunion! It will be my first trip back to Texas in over 10 years! I plan to bring my road bike.

WonkerJaw 09-03-04 12:32 PM

cool... we'll have to do it.

rockygnr 09-06-04 11:56 AM

Just checkin in here. Weighed in this morning at 200 even. Haven't seen 200 in a long time. Down from 258 July 2003. Bought a new bike in August as an early reward. Bought a Burley Koosah recumbent. Sure is great riding without pain.

Zin 09-06-04 11:59 AM

Hey rockygnr, good job on the weight loss! So, how do you balance on a recumbent? I've alwasy wondered about that!

rockygnr 09-06-04 12:04 PM

Well it is different than my upright bike. But after about 5 awkward minutes you get the hang of it. I think it looks more awkward than it is. I really notice different muscles being used. I feel it in the legs and abs. At first I was a little concerned about being different and what it might look like. And then I realised that looking different was what I really was about. LOL.

Zin 09-06-04 12:17 PM

Thanks for the info, rockygnr. I guess its kind of like learning to pilot a tandem, only without havng the communication issues with a new stoker.

Yeah, don't worry about being different. When I see a "bent" rider, I always think, "How cool is that machine!" Besides, I am a firm believer in joy of riding comes before fassion. If it gets you out and riding, It is a good thing. :D

John M 09-07-04 06:39 AM

Congrats on the weight loss! Cool on the new bike :). As long as you enjoy yourself that is the most important thing!

WonkerJaw 09-07-04 07:47 AM

Hey rockygnr,
Way to go on the weight loss. I saw a lot of the recumbent style bikes on a century ride I did back in March. I think they cool… they look like a lot of fun.

Thanks N7CZ,

That is a much better calc then what I've seen, plus I can gauge my cal burn per my weight MUCH better. That calc seems to give my thought that 1500 calorie per day diet, plus the 16.5 mile comute realistic for my weight loss goals for Spring training. I'll keep you guys posted how it works out(although I'm a little warry of the 16.5 to 33 mi per day 3-5x a week on 1500 cals and not LOOSING it!).

Here's a thread with a calorie counter wth a weight-road time-MPH ratio. Pretty cool, plus it's animated(kinda).

Hey Lufy. Glad I could help.
1500 calories per day sounds a little on the low side to me for your "projected" activity level. I was on an 1800 calorie per day diet from my diabetic doctor. Have you checked with a Diatition or your doctor? It is not wise to go onto a restriction like you are talking about without medical supervision.

Good luck!

Bob
